Thank you evilfantasy for the info in this. I had been trying to remove some malware w/trend_micro's stuff w/o any success. The other place worked just fine and now I have my "windows task manager" back and the desktop is normal again. Keep up the good work ;)

You should post the HijackThis log.

There is usually more to do, lack of symptoms isn't always an indication the malware is actually gone.
