Things like this really piss me off...

[...]I don’t want Bonjour or Safari on this machine, so I deselected the iTunes + QuickTime check box, clicked the Safari box so that both it and Bonjour were selected, and then chose Tools, Ignore Software Updates. The entries for Bonjour and Safari went away, the updater refreshed itself, and a new list appeared, containing only iTunes + QuickTime. The check box was selected already, so I clicked Install 1 Item and approved the UAC consent box.

While the download proceeded, I opened the temporary folder where the update program stores its downloads (%LocalAppData%\Apple\Apple Software Update) and watched as the following five installer packages appeared:

Next, I watched as the status box continued to tell me that only iTunes + QuickTime were being installed. And then, when setup was complete, I looked in Control Panel’s list of Installed Programs, filtered to show only Apple software, and saw this:

It looks to me as it's just a package and not actually installed on the computer. Look at the file size.

Update: The closer I look, the worse this gets. While the installer was running initially, I copied the five individual installer packages to a folder on the desktop so that they would still be around instead of being automatically deleted at setup’s end. Next, I uninstalled everything from Apple except Apple Software Update and QuickTime. After confirming that these were the only Apple programs installed, I ran the iTunes.msi Installer package. It proceeded to install itself and Apple Mobile Device Support and Bonjour.
Even more bizarre: I renamed the Bonjour and Apple Mobile Device Support installer packages, then selected iTunes and clicked Uninstall in Control Panel. The setup program appeared to remove iTunes and cleared its entry from the list of installed programs. But after restarting, when I ran the iTunes.msi Installer package, I was prompted to Repair or Remove iTunes. Despite the fact that I had explicitly chosen to uninstall iTunes, enough of it remained on my system that Apple’s setup program believed it was dealing with an incomplete or damaged installation. Choosing Repair finally got me the two programs I specifically authorized and no others.

That makes me think- Why is it mostly Media players and such that implement skins? Why must these programs selectively abandon all traces of User Interface Design, while simultaneously consuming extraneous resources? Windows Media Player itself, on my computer, after I accidentally left it running for the duration of a day, was consuming 800MB of my 1GB of RAM! Of course, I'm sure that has more to do with a automatically installed Chrome plugin that I didn't know I had, but I've made my point.

Part of the problem (as I preach to the choir) is that too many of us are taken in by all the "eye candy." "My" version of the Internet would be a lot more visually boring than what we have now, because I'd rather have quality of content and performance over every visually-based enhancement that's come along.

that would reduce bandwidth consumption considerably, too- and a lot of those darn kids will stop consuming all our bandwidth! Darn kids, with their rock and roll and their eight-track tapes.
One problem though- how does that fit googles vision of a web-based OS, which I honestly find laughable, since it simply gives ISP services complete control. Nowadays you can have a functioning computer without internet, but what about if this whole "web OS" thing comes through? Will usage of a computer suddenly require internet access?
I didn't have the internet on my home computer for my first 4 years of learning programming- it was me, the computer, Visual Basic, and the MSDN library.
I swear I went through almost every article in that library, no matter how redundant the topic... and I learned alot from my browsing of it. Now you can start up a browser, enter a search, and 9 times out of ten, you've got what you're looking for! Where is the accidental side-tracking into irrelevant topics due to the crappy nature of the MSDN search feature? Sure, one could say that it's better- but without accidentally looking at a topic that was highly ranked for no reason, how can you hope to gain insight into anything other then the topic of your search.
Isn't this enough, google? Do people REALLY want to simply skip the "start the browser" step, or are you perhaps being guided by want of a more girthful wallet?

You reminded me of what I've read about where Microsoft (and others) want to head: this whole realm of "web based" computing, services, and software to which we'll happily subscribe!

"VISTA SUCKS" or something equally childish, I mean, only a really dumb fool would do that, seriously. :)

I spent almost 20 minutes trying to find a way to do that and still have some context in the discussion. In fact- I was trying to make it look like a complete accident. That would be the funniest instance.

I just had another thought (I hate to go on-topic) but-
Apple is always preaching how Windows machines crash and don't work, and so forth-
and yet, 80% of the problems of windows machines seem to be caused by Apple software!
