I accidently Hit a keyboared key (I think It was the CTRL) Key 5 times and got an error message. Forgot exactly what it said. Anyway, It was a stickykey thing, Now everytime I start up my computer There Is a icon In the sytem tray that shows up. Its the sticky key thing. I cant find it on my add and remove, And it makes a loud sound when I hit certain keys. How can I get rid of It and what Is its purpose?
-
Do you mean a hotkey?
-
He accidentally enabled the stickykeys applet and wants to know how to shut it off.
what happens when you click or right-click the sticky-keys icon in the system tray? Is there not an option to quit?
EDIT: Nope, I just checked.
Failing that- open control panel, select Accessibility options, And on the keyboard tab, you can disable those features you don't want. (I for one, have them all disabled).

Turn on/off StickeyKeys, hit the shift button 5 times. Thats all there is to it.

I had done it on Server08 till just now, it makes a pretty weird sound as well :)

indeed, chrisxs5- but pressing it 5 times again will enable it again. I don't believe the OP requires the functionality presented, so I provided a solution to disable it completely.

but pressing it 5 times again will enable it again
Actually, in Vista, pressing shift 5 times will open a prompt, asking you if you want to enable it... :)
-
same as XP, but close enough. besides, that is what happened the first time the OP pressed it five times- an "error message" to which they clicked OK, enabling StickyKeys.

All comments; are very true and accurate. But, I tend to deal with all my situations from a "I don't really want to get up form my desk" scenario. So from what I have scene in most cases regarding StickyKeys, is that the user gets frustrated and hits a bunch of keys, after that they accidentally turn on StickyKeys and call me; I immediately tell them to hit the shift key 5 times and then I look like a hero again. Yes of course it can be disabled and technically if we really wanted to take the time it can be removed entirely form the system with no trace of ever existing... But in this case, it just seemed as if the, "hit the shift key 5 times", answer worked very well and gave an insight to how it happened in the first place. 8)

All hail Chrisxs5! LOOOOOOOOL! ;D

:-[ Now lets not go that far, I have plenty of post out there with my name on it, that proves I have no clue what I'm talking about most of the time! :D

And another reason for my description is- well, I forgot that you could press shift 5 times again to turn it off.
-
Right.... ::)

;D ROTFL ;D

now remember I have had this stuff disabled since I accidentally enabled it the first time, so it only makes sense I wouldn't know all the nuances involved.
-
If you want to disable the StickyKeys shortcut...
Press "Shift" five times.
Click on "Settings" in the StickyKeys window.
Click on "Settings" in the StickyKeys section of the Accessibility Options window.
Uncheck the "Use shortcut" box.

That worked, Thanks all. I feel so retarted, The fix was so novice.
-
You feel retarded! I'm the one that gave a drawn out explanation to solve the problem when all that was needed was five keypresses! :X

I felt retarded once, how do you think I know about StickyKeys? Seriously tho, is there any one who has found a practical daily purpose for its use anyways?
-
people with physical handicaps might find it useful- try pressing Ctrl Alt Delete with one hand. (alright, bad example, you can use the right hand alt & control keys, but you know what I'm getting at.
-
Never thought of that, we have a guy here with a hand impairment and we just looked at StickyKeys together, he loves it already. I guess I am just mostly close minded.
