I need to copy some files to CD but can't access them
Any ideas anyone Thank you

Download drive.reg: http://technize.com/content/downloads/drive.reg to your desktop.
Double click on downloaded file, and allow registry merge.
Restart computer.
-
I downloaded drive.reg ran it ;a window says it is now in your registry; I restarted and it still comes up with Open with....
Thanks; where can we go from here please?

Try here: http://wiki.answers.com/Q/When_you_double-click_your_C_drive_it_gives_you_an_option_to_choose_a_program_to_open_with._What_can_you_do_to_open_it_by_double-clicking
-
Thanks Broni but no Luck....no virus files were found
Heinz
-
Did you go through all those steps, including registry modifications?
-
There was no MS32DLL to remove nor "Hacked by Godzilla" Also next step windows cannot find "gpedit.msc" even though typed correctly.
That's where I bog down.

Continue with Extended Solution section, which is the most important part.
I can't do this for you....
-
Thanks for your patients Broni; I just thought you had to do each step first before you could go on,,,
Made the regfix file in Wordpad now get the message "the file is not a registry script file
Can only import binary files from within the registary
-
It has to be text file. Notepad is better to do it. Make sure, you save that file as regfix.reg
-
The registry is now over copied...however when i click on C Drive in "my Computer" it still comes up with "open with" window
Something NEW, when I open CD-Burner XP it shows all the files when I look at drive C to burn an ISO image, etc
Does this help
-
The registry is now over copied
Did you restart computer?
-
Re-started computer and same/same
-
I assume, you copied this whole text:

to Notepad, and saved it as .reg file, correct?
...and you didn't miss a single line?
-
I think everything was done correctly but I'll do it again
Thanks so much
-
No harm done, if you re-do.
-
I am opening the NEW regfix. by double clicking and it gives the same error message as before
so I copied all to Notepad to try and over write the reg but it won't let me either way.
Yet I can look at drive d and c with CD Burner XP. These are both one physical drive.
-
Maybe you're doing something wrong.
Select all text inside the quote in my post #13, right click, and click "Copy".
Open Notepad, right click on any empty space inside, and click "Paste".
Go File>Save As, and save it as regfix.reg to some known location, like desktop.
Now, close all windows, and double click on regfix.reg. Allow registry merge.
Restart computer.
-
It starts with [HKEY , Not with "Windows Registry Editor... " right ? and ends with @="AppProperties" correct?
Any way I have done it with both beginnings and the left double click ONLY opens the wordpad OR the
Notepad file...Nothing else happens
-
No, a whole piece, starting with "Windows registry editor".
-
Ok, Done double click still only opens Wordpad orNotepad; restarted...nada
-
save as .REG- sounds like it's being saved as .TXT or .REG.TXT
-
So I right clicked on regfix and it was set to open with Wordpad so I changed to registry editor That seemed to change the name regedit under the icon to regedit.reg but still can't open drive C etc
-
save as .REG- sounds like it's being saved as .TXT or .REG.TXT
You must be doing something wrong here.
-
Who is this BC Programmer and where did the (capitalized) .REG come from? Ionly mentioned regfix.reg...
By the way I downloaded the file "drive" as requested earlier and it did incorporate itself into the registry
When you click on drive C or D (one partitioned Harddrive) it still opens the window "open with..."
Some one must have an answer out there please

Hi
Notepad has a pitfall with the "Save As" option :-
If you stipulate a file as regfix.reg,
Notepad will automatically create regfix.reg.TXT,
and to avoid this you should go below the File Name box
and use the "Save as Type" box,
and switch from the default "Text documents (*.txt)"
to the "All Files" mode.
When I right click on a file called regfix.reg.TXT, the "Open With" options include
Notepad and Wordpad, but do NOT include Registry Editor.
When I right click on a file regfix.REG, the "Open With" options include
Notepad and Registry Editor, but do NOT include Registry Editor.
Your final question was "(capitalized) .REG come from? "
Do not worry about it.
Capital letters were only used to emphasise 3 very significant characters.

Alan

Txs Alan
The "save as type" change to "all files" allowed it resolve the registry. Well done...
I restarted the computer but It still gives the "open with..." window when you try to see your files

Thanks Broni for sticking in there ...It was a virus
PROBLEM SOLVED
Heinz
-
Aha! Thanks for posting back :)
-
What virus and how was this determined ? ?
We're curious like that... ;D
-
see reply #28 I believe...
-
Sorry reply #27 from Broni
Heinz
-
OK. It's not clear.
You had a virus, which was cured, and THEN you used fix from my link, or....?
-
Yes, the fix from your link fixed the problem. The link suggests that "autorun.inf" is a virus?no?
-
Yeah, virus leftover.
Are you sure, your computer is clean, now?
-
How can I be relatively sure...? I run AVG daily...

When I right click on a file regfix.REG, the "Open With" options include
Notepad and Registry Editor, but do NOT include Registry Editor.
OOPS
I did a copy / paste / correct / preview and it looked O.K. before I posted.
I now see it went wrong somehow - it should read :-
When I right click on a file regfix.REG, the "Open With" options include
Notepad and Registry Editor, but do NOT include Wordpad.

c:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
c:\> del autorun.inf
d:\> attrib -r -s -h autorun.inf
d:\> del autorun.inf
restart the pc
