Remove the 160G HDD and hook it up as a slave in a known working machine and backup/burn to your heart's content...

If you have a USB port, you can save your data to an external hard drive or a flash drive.

If your DVD drive has stopped working, then you can just buy a new one.

Also, there is online storage.

Really?  Is that allowed?

Was that what was being asked?

HERE (http://freepctech.com/pc/001/installing_ide_devices.shtml) is one guide to read.  It is not the best as far as pictures, and I apologize.  I will try to find a better example.  I've seen other posters show better pictures.

HERE (http://www.pchell.com/hardware/masterslaveorcableselect.shtml) is another article, which has a picture.  There are still better examples, and I'm trying to find them.

Each hard drive brand is a little different.

paul420...

If you're trying to burn a DVD using Windows XP...you'll find it may not be possible.  Windows XP can only copy files to CDs.

However, you'll be able to copy the files you need to the DVD using a third-party program like, Nero.  There are free ones on the market...all you have to do is a search at http://www.snapfiles.com and you may even find a freeware version.
