I'm trying 2 fix a Compaq presario5000 for a friend, but when i try 2 turn pc on as soon as the xp logo is done the pc restarts. does the same thing w/ safe mode and when i tried to restore. there has been no changes to hardware and none 2 software that i know of. was upgraded to xp pro from me any help would be much appreciated.

disable the restart option when system detect error.(control Panel>system>advanced>startup and recovery settings>uncheck the system restart box)
if this doesn't solve, then try to diable your HDD UDMA mode, try bios settings(under primary IDE,disable UDMA mode) or safe mode, under hardware manager,IDE/ATA device.

Clean install?

I think only_lonely is on the right track here. If you are able to get into safe mode and disable the auto restart you'll be able to see the blue screen and error messages. These messages can give some insight into the problem.

How can i do that if i can't get past windows logo before restarts and if i try safe mode it will restart also........

You have a valid argument. :-[ D'oh!
Am I correct in assuming that you have an XP disc? You can try booting to the XP disc and performing a repair installation.

I'm not sure the installation is the problem at all. Just last week my hp pavilion would boot up to the windows xp boot screen, then restart. It turned out that it was a bad hdd. It had died after 3 years of use. So maybe you have a dead hard drive.

Also- disabling system restart on system failure is an option presented at the F8 menu, if memory serves.
Paudashlake is probably right though- I will fathom a guess that the bugcheck rebooting the machine is something along the lines of a UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME error.
a reformat might solve this, however- it might simply be a corrupted Filesystem, not necessarily a failed HD.
