Title: sound card problem maybe
Post by: brett74 on November 14, 2008, 08:03:35 PM
Hi I've been having a problem with my sound I have win xp sp3 and also have a soundblaster audiogy sound card I've updated the drivers and it didn't help i've also did a repair install on windows and then reinstalled the drivers thinking maybe a virus that  had messed things up but that didn't help I even tried to reinstall the games and nothing worked right now I'm thinking it maybe my card but I'm not sure. I'm playing battlefield 42 and battlefield 2 and now it seems to do it when I play a regular cd too. I've also  pulled the card out and put it back in and still nothing cured it. I've even put it in another slot but that didn't work.

Easiest way to determine if it's the card would be to swap it into another machine and install the drivers...

or if another spare card is lying around, install that one and see if it works properly.

It's a version of linux it's like linspire. I put the sound card in my other pc and it worked great so right now I'm thinking it has something to do with the motherboard or processor

If it worked fine in the other machine then the XP machine probably has the wrong drivers installed.
Remove the device completely in device manager and use Add/Remove programs to remove all Sound Blaster software and start over...
Use the original drivers if you have them.

okay I've tried what you told me to do and I still have the problem I've also updated the drivers again and then I set it on 24bit instead of 16 bit and it does sound a little better

okay when i'm playing battlefield42 and I get a map loading the sound will start out slow and distorted and it will still do it until the map is loaded then when I start the game it seems to work just fine. This has been going on since I got the vundo virus a couple of months ago and I thought that I had it cleaned actually probably longer than that it just suddenly started back then so anyways this past week I did a repair install on windows and reinstalled my programs and sound card drivers but it still did it. So yesterday I did what you guys told me and the card worked great in my linux machine so I know that the card is fine now and today I uninstalled the old driver and installed the new one and changed the bit depth in device control and now in battlefield 42 I do not notice it hardly at all. There's some sound lag a tiny bit but nothing like it was
