Disable or uninstall any antivirus, disk defragmentation or back-up utilities, check your hard drive configuration and check for any updated drivers. Run CHDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption then restart your computer.

When you get back to that black screen, choose Safemode.
Can you get into windows now?

WE need more info.

List as much about your computer as possible. This includes operating system (what version of Windows you are using), service packs, computer make/model, RAM, hard drive, sound and video cards, current adware/spyware/virus programs being used on a regular basis, do you have a "real" Windows CD, etc.

unfortunately no, i have tried all the options which were safe mode, safe mode(networking),safe mode(with command prompt),previous working xp settings and also start windows normally

System details
Windows XP SP3
512MB Ram
Amd Athlon Processor(unsure about model)
Nvidia GeForce Graphics Card
its only just had the problem as of today
i think it might be because the drives need to be defragged but cannot access the computers desktop
thanx

You need to have the exact same version of XP as the one on the disk. We should be able to save your data and repair the install.
