Title: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 or 9800
Post by: saint_hades on November 21, 2008, 01:53:17 PM
Hi,
I think I remember hearing that the GeForce 9800 and the 8800 are more or less the same. Because I have a 9600 in my computer at the moment and to play Crysis you need to have (recommended settings) a 8800 or better.

Anyway is the 8800 more or less the same as the 9800 because the 8800 is at least £50 cheaper than the 9800
Thanks

The 9800, depending on what version, will be a little better than an 8800. But some 8800 are better than 9800 it just depends on what you choose from.

The 8800GT and 9800GT are the same card.  The 9800GT (well, some of them) use 55nm technology and thus run cooler, performance is the same.  Also, the 9800GT supports 3-way SLI, which the 8800GT does not.
Neither is much of an improvement over a 9600GT though.

well, I found a deal on Newegg.com that let me get the EVGA 9800 CHEAPER than the EVGA 8800 :)
If that deal is still up, don't hesitate to jump on it!

I'm loving my, 9800 by the way :D

Would it be worth just saving up for the '280'

Don't mock common knowledge. They both use an identical core with identical processing power.
The trinkets the 9800-series comes with does justify the price to some, but it could never justify nVidia's name scheme to me.

I think I remember reading something 'Game spot', they do loads of Graphics cards comparisons.

I wasn't "mocking" anything ....i was asking for a source which you also haven't provided.

I was under the impression that 8800gt's run on a 65nm core and a 9800 runs on a 55nm core.  There also seems to be some difference as far as power management.  So from what I understand they have the exact same power but the 9800 will run cooler (better for overclocking) and will save you a bit on your electricity bill.

Edit:  My source was google, go ahead and search google you'll find hundreds of sources saying the exact same thing.

If you are interested, try this website to check your system on various games against the game of interest's minimum requirements.

However, I was using Internet Explorer to load the site though, uses some activeX.

Yea thanks I checked that before I posted here and it said to play crysis (recommended settings)  I need to have the 8800 or higher.

I can play every other game though, just not crysis

Just a few links I've found.  Not my original source, but I can't remember where I first heard it . . . I wasn't sure so I dug into it.
Check the specs too: they both have 112 stream processors, 600MHz core, 1500MHz shader, 1800MHz memory clocks.
It's actually possible, from what I've read, to flash the 8800GT to a 9800GT BIOS, to change the name - clicky (http://www.overclock.net/nvidia/372369-8800gt-9800gt-success.html) - although I don't recommend this.

I was under the impression that 8800gt's run on a 65nm core and a 9800 runs on a 55nm core.

As I said, some 9800GTs are 55nm and some aren't.  Seems Nvidia cleared out their old stock of 8800GT cards by flashing the 9800GT BIOS and then started a 55nm process when they'd got rid of the older cards.  Some speculation, but I've heard that elsewhere too, just don't recall where.

saint_hades, the GTX 280 isn't very good value for money, I don't recommend it.
Also, your system will handle Crysis fine.  I play on all high settings, 1440x900, no AA/AF with a 30-35fps average, which is very playable.

Thanx for the links and info...

A Link from your Links (http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/10/03/nvidia-sticks-names-old-cards)

65nm and 55nm dies were used. For quite awhile in the 8800 line you could buy the 256MG cards (cheaper) and with a BIOS flash they actually had 512MG...
I understand manuf. do re-branding all the time but if there were 2 different die sets it would be splitting hairs to say they are actually the same product.

Just my 2 cents and not an argument at all...

If it's a case of the same performance and same specs, to me it's the same product with a different name.
The 55nm parts are different, but only in that they run cooler and use less power, they're still essentially the same (to me) as the other specs, and performance, remains the same.
Whether that inquirer article will turn out to be true I don't know, along with Fudzilla they do give out some wacky info from time to time.

I've found these two cards
https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-88GT5 (https://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?NOV-88GT5)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-8800-500M-320MB-EXPRESS/dp/tech-data/B000NGIDLO/ref=de_a_smtd (http://www.amazon.co.uk/XFX-8800-500M-320MB-EXPRESS/dp/tech-data/B000NGIDLO/ref=de_a_smtd)

The Amazon one is a GTS 8800 320MB and the novatech one is a 8800 GT 512MB

which one is better?
The Amazon card has a longer name 's' in it but it looks worst
thanks

oh and considering that 9800 is same as 8800 virtually except it's cooler and uses less power, that's a plus!
