Hello...Just checking to see if anyone else has seen this web site up and down when trying to access it. Sometimes it resolves the URL correctly, othertimes it comes up with it not resolving and comes up with the suggestion page. Sometimes I will go to post info and long delay and it doesnt get to computerhope.
I have a dedicated fiber corporate connection, so I am pretty sure its not at my end.
Thanks,
Dave

I was about to ask same question. I've noticed this for the first time on Sunday late afternoon.
It still was happening to me today.
Also, once in a while, pages take 30-45 sec to load.
-
Its been giving me problems for the past three days. I try to log on to site and It takes forever or just doe's not connect. other times It go's rite to the site, Hey that rhymes!!
-
Same here, and it's been quite bad today.
-
I gather the site has been migrated to new hosting arrangements. Is that why it keeps crapping out? Does anybody know?
-
I for one know there seems to be less and less traffic...i put up with the connection issues only because i don't like to leave people hanging with unresolved issues.
But it has indeed been a chore both to even log on most times and to post.
I got into the habit of copy/paste of replies because i had lost so many on attempting to post.
I understand server issues...i also remember it was crappy before the move to the new server. For a brief while right after the move it was golden...but it's far from that now.
All i can say is be patient and let's see how it goes.
Hopefully things will improve and or at least get back to when there were few connection issues...
patio.
-
Yep, all the above, me too.
-
So far, I've only had two instances of a connection issue lasting longer than a minute. But I have to imagine that it's probably going to put some people off if they can't get into the site easily. If it continues this way and we don't seen Nathan anytime soon, perhaps one of us could page him or send a text message his way. It would be more effective than e-mail if he's been away from his computer.
-
and we don't seen Nathan anytime soon
Nathan was here just four hours back, I'm sure he'll look into this as soon as he can, he's had to do so much with the forum already, all the server ordeal and everything, lets just give him a lil time, a site that has been around for so long won't just die in a day or two.
I will leave him a few messages today in all the places that I can think of.
I know you guys don't wanna hear this ........but......be patient. :)
-
I want to say three things:
1. I agree 100% with what patio said.
2. Those, who say, they have minimal problems, apparently are not around here often enough.
3. I'm seriously considering taking a break from CH, until the issues are solved. The only thing, which puts me on hold is "i don't like to leave people hanging with unresolved issues". But enough may be enough.
P. S. I have to say this. I do. The whole issue started around Sunday, 8 days ago. Since then, Nathan visited here several times. I personally feel little bit offended by a lack of any single word from him about the issue. Just something like: "Hey guys, I'm aware of the problems, I'm working on it". Nothing was said. I think, we deserve that little for all hard work, we've been doing around here.
I had to spit it out. Thank you.
-
...and the email notification stopped working again...have a good night...
-
2. Those, who say, they have minimal problems, apparently are not around here often enough.
That makes sense; but I also think it might be a time-based thing; for example, I get home from work at around 8AM; but everyday when I first attempt to visit CH I have problems (timeout). However; around 10 AM it works fine. It also appears to have a few problems in the late evening as well, but usually (for me) during the late morning and afternoon it's golden.
-
I must be logging in on strange times because I've yet to encounter any issues with the forum and/or site or see anything in the logs that seem to indicate serious issues. I did recently add an addition 2GB of memory recently to help accommodate for the busy times of the day that were getting maxed out on connections so I assumed I would of had no issues for a long time but based of your above posts I guess that's wrong I'll try to watch the site/forums more closely during all times of the day.
If you can let me know what times you're encountering the issues and I'll watch them more closely or try to look at the logs.If I was running into issues as well the issues would of been looked at but this is a first for me. Been getting 90%+ pages generated in less than a second.
-
This morning I've ran a repair on the DB and will run a few more maintenance things on the site and DB later tonight when it's slower while I wait for additional replies about if this is still occuring and when and while I try to watch the site and server even closer.
-
It's being looked at. I personally haven't had any issues, so have been under the impression that everything was fine. I believe it could be that this last week with the holidays I've been logging in at non-busy times.
I've made a few adjustments that I hope will resolve the latest issues. Let me know if you run into issues and if so what time (with time zone) or try to create a post in this thread with your time stamp so I can try to look at the logs more closely.
-
I've had problems this morning and off and on since 9 December. Hope you can find and solve the problem. Good Luck !
-
12:42 EST til 1:04 EST....did not connect...

The last 3 days I've been signed into CH from 8 AM to about 6 PM EST, however I've only been actively logged into the site about 50% of that time. It seems to be getting worse rather than better. Have to cut and paste responses not knowing if the response would post.
At first it was just annoying, now frustration has taken hold. Aggravation here we come.

I also have had problems getting on this site, including today at 1600hrs GMT. Got on okay just now though.
-
2:30 EST to about 2:42 issues...
"The server is taking too long to respond"...
-
1:30 central time, no connection.
-
Took 7 attempts to connect, Network Timed Out, 8.23pm GMT
-
3:20 kicked off...just got back on.
Not staying...
-
still problems getting on today , 4 tries
-
Ok thanks guys continuing to look for possible cause.
-
2:30 EST to about 2:42 issues...
"The server is taking too long to respond"...
Same issue for me last night at about 12:45 AM PST. I don't know when the issue stopped because I just went to bed after that.
-
I came home around 2PM PST, and so far, no issues. I'll pray...
-
grrrr....spoke too soon...it just happen...couldn't log on for 2 minutes...
Connection Interrupted
The connection to the server was reset while the page was loading.
-
I've had none so far today...
-
Had another issue a few hours ago at 8:40 PM PST. It lasted about 10 minutes.
-
Started it up at 8.05am and it came on like a bullet.
-
Spent the last few hours trying to go through everything possible on the server while I hunt for potential problems. Unfortunately didn't find to much when you guys are getting the timeout issues / connection issues have you happened to try the main site: http://www.computerhope.com and not a forum page? Based off the description of the issue it sounds to me like a potential complete site issue, but just want to make sure when you're encountering it, it's not a forum issue.
My intuition keeps telling me that it's a DNS related issue but from everything I can see on my end the DNS information looks fine.
-
When these connection problems happen (just happened now, actually), the entire site is unavailable for a couple of minutes, and it seem to have all started when you changed the memory.
Not sure what might have happened, or if that's accurate or not.
-
I really can't imagine adding more memory to the machine causing issues. It's possible that it's something I did afterwords or some other update that caused the issue.
I noticed when getting back on the computer after taking a break that my logging stopped because of an auto update that was ran on the system so starting it again and trying to catch the problem on my end. I've yet to encounter this problem.
-
Guess I'll start logging this too, although I haven't so far.
1:30-2pm GMT, sporadic connection issues. Forum seems to be generally a little slow, although the "page generated in ..." doesn't seem out of the ordinary.
-
Does it seem to be timing out (e.g. you wait for several seconds/minutes before getting an error) or is it an immediate error?
-
It's a timeout.
At home, with Firefox, it's the usual "Server taking too long to respond" deal, here at college it's the IE equivalent.
Never an immediate error.
Edit: site seems to be fast now, a lot snappier than it was a few minutes ago.
-
A few minutes it's fine, then no connection, then it's fine, then there's no connection, ect......
Absolutely horrible during the night here. pretty good during the day.
-
So are you currently experiencing the issues Carbon? Because been refreshing and browsing around for the last hour with no issues and nothing in the error logs either.
-
So are you currently experiencing the issues Carbon?
Fine now. As Calum said, very snappy and quick.
-
!0:20 AM EST.....no connection
10:40 " "
11:09 " "
Just logged on to post this.
Seeya.
-
Couldn't get on for the past 10 - 20 minutes.
-
Timed out - 8:22AM PST
Nathan. It started happening around 5PM PST on Sunday 12/7/08. Maybe this info will help you to trace something from some logs.
-
Thanks for the information everyone. I just restarted the Apache service so I'm sure there was a hiccup a few minutes ago. Hopefully what I did well help although still believe there is some type of DNS issue, so I also have submitted a request into IT to see if they have a DNS expert that can look what I did / destroyed since I can't see anything wrong with it (but I'm no expert).

;D ;D
Good you can keep your wits about you there Nathan... ;)
-
Been unable to get on the forums the past hour.
Why couldn't this happen during my exams...... ::)
Anyways, off to bed.
-
Sorry to hear that. Still working with IT even though I should be going to bed. If someone happens to get this again would you mind doing a traceroute (tracert) on computerhope.com and mrhope.com.
I did finally manage to get a ping timeout on mrhope.com which is handling the DNS. As of right now IT is saying nothing is wrong with the DNS information.
-
Also email notifications are very slow and often duplicated.
-
Today at 16.00hrs GMT I could not get onto this site. Got "Network Timeout" message. Just now at 19.27hrs GMT no problem.
-
back to normal , great
-
I've merged two threads discussing the same thing into this one thread so I can keep track of everything easier and so something said isn't said by multiple users. Myself and IT have done some additional fixes and tweaks to help with everything. Hopefully what has been done will help resolve everything.
If you do encounter this issue again after this post I'd appreciate it if you could help me in resolving this issue by providing a traceroute (tracert) of computerhope.com, by doing the following.
Start / Run / type: command <press enter>
Type: tracert computerhope.com
Copy and paste the results into this thread
This should provide you with output like the below example. If you're not comfortable posting this data to the forum (which really is not a concern for the public to see) you can PM the data.

In Britain, advertisements for investment products such as stock funds have by law to include the words "Past Performance is No Guarantee of Future Results". Applies to lots of other things too.
-
The site has been great the past few days.
Whatever you did Nathan, it worked.
Haven't encountered any problems.
-
Same here.
-
Ditto...
Add more RAM
;D
-
Thanks guys that's good news. I think it may have been the requests a second was too low on Apache which is why it was random, or appeared to be random. I increased from 256/s to 512/s. :)
-
Nicely Done...and again thanx for all your efforts Nathan.
-
Yeah, thanks a lot, Nathan. Things have been running smoothly for me all week!
