My computer uses an 2.0 Ghz Intel 2 Core duo processor, and uses XP pro. One day when I was listening to music, the computer started "skipping" the song, like a broken CD. I restarted the computer, and noticed how slowly everything was operating. I just the CPU usage and, even when I'm not running applications, the usage will spike up to 50 percent. Then, when I run applications like iTunes, it will increase to 100 percent. I ran Nortan, and Spybot Search and Destroy, yet nothing came up. Is there something else I can do? At first I thought the problem was caused by the computer being in my bathroom while I was taking a shower, but the computer would either stop working completely or be fine after 8 hours.

Okay,
1. I checked my program list and found nothing suspicious.
2. Decided to just delete all of my cookies, just in case.
3. The download became a problem. My internet connection kept getting stalled just long enough to mess up the download. It wouldn't let me redownload so I restarted and tried again two more times before getting it. It took something like 14 hours to scan the computer. Unfortunately, it didn't detect any bugs.

Nothing malicious shows up in any of these logs. I don't think this is a virus problem.
I don't know if the shower would've caused this problem, but it's definitely something you want to avoid!
Does the sound skip in every program?
What are you using to listen to music?
Have you tried defragging?
Is your computer still under warranty?
Lastly...is this a Dell Inspiron 1300 by any chance? They are notorious for having this exact same problem.

The sound does skip in every program. I was using iTunes. I tried defraging but the processor is still messed up. However, I tried switching my xp hard drive with my smaller Vista drive just to see if it was a computer or hard drive problem and the computer works fine with a different hard drive. It is under warranty but they won't replace the hard drive which I added after buying the computer. I'm beginning to think I'm gonna have to wipe the drive and reinstall XP on it but I can't find my disk and I used my last install of office on it so I really don't want to have to let it come to that.

I'd be happy to continue helping you out, but you may have better luck with this issue over in the Windows section (http://www.computerhope.com/forum/index.php/board,1.0.html) (it'll go faster). If you post there with your problem, you're likely to get more responses from different people (there are only a couple of us here in the malware section) and will have a better chance of finding a solution. If you post there, make sure you include a link to this page so they can have access to all of the information available so far.
Also, what file/program appears to be taking up all of your process usage? If you're having trouble determining this, you can try downloading Process Explorer (http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx).

You know, that's a good idea. Now that I think about it, I believe people have had Norton cause problems like this in the past. This isn't a guaranteed fix, but it's certainly worth a try.
The two guides above are also worth looking into (unlovedwarrior really deserves most of the credit for the first one).

Quick update, I was incorrect about the new hard drive fixing the problem. It persists despite the new hard drive, albeit I can at least use the computer while running vista for non-games, as opposed to lagging like crazy for no reason with the XP drive. I will try out the guides and turning off Norton. Should I still post this in the windows topic? Or does my previous misinformation mean nothing?

Edit: I tried the above tips and the processor is still not up to snuff. So I'm going to try reposting this with the addition of what you guys have helped me find out, in the hardware section, where I believe it now belongs.

Sounds good, Rob. If you are still experiencing problems, especially with a different hard drive, then I agree that it sounds like a hardware issue. I'm sure the guys over in that section will be able to help you out.
