Title: Help with disabled monitor
Post by: afranz6 on December 24, 2008, 09:33:54 AM
Somehow my computer monitor has been disabled and i have tried rebooting in safe mode and in last known configuration, yet both did not work.  Now everytime we start the computer a screen comes up saying setup is being restarted and freezes. If i could somehow get to the desktop i could use the device management and get through it in the dark but i can't get the computer to boot up. HELP please. thanks

No its not a laptop. its windows xp and i cant get to the desktop. everytime i go to reboot the computer it freezes mid process on a page that says "setup is restarting".  If i could figure out a way to get to the desktop i know a way to enable the monitor but right now the computer wont go to the desktop.

Setup is Restarting? Are you not booting Windows normally?

Also, can you try another monitor if you think it's a monitor problem?

We have tried booting it in safe mood and normal mood and both times it freezes and says setup is restarting. And right now it's not really a monitor problem, since we can't even get to boot anymore. Before it would boot and go to a black page but now it freezes.

err basically that means your windows partition is screwed, your installation failed partway through?

Slave your drive in another machine, backup all your important stuff off, and reformat and reinstall windows.

OR

Try a Repair Install:
http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

None of your personal files will be deleted.
You will need the Genuine XP CD.

I was going to suggest this but in my experience once the installation has gotten to here, Windows no longer detects it as a windows XP partition and doesn't give you the option to repair it.

No harm in trying.
