Title: Nothing After User Select Screen
Post by: HammerSmashedJames on January 11, 2009, 07:23:30 AM
My Toshiba Satellite laptop (Windows XP) has had ALOT of problems as of late but i managed to fix most of them... After just leaving the laptop in the corner of the room to gather dust.

However, the last time I used my computer, I left AVG running over night doing a full computer scan. In the morning when i came to my computer, it was off. So I turned it on and it went to the user select screen, (which it never does because there is only one account on there and it always goes right in unless it has been put to sleep or hibernating)

So, I clicked my account and it showed my background for a couple of seconds (no icons or anything) and then it went back to the user select screen. So I clicked it again and it had my account name and it said "Logging on" under it. Then without even showing the background, it said "saving your settings" then "logging off" and stayed at the user select screen.

So I went into safe mode to see I could do something about it but it does the same for the safe mode.

I also tried to restore the computer back to last known good configuration in the F8 menu where you can select Safe Mode. However, it still does the same :(

If someone on here could help me I would appreciate it so much.

Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

Test your hard drive: http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=287
Use Seagate tool.

For some reason it won't let me go to accept. My cursor doesn't move and the arrow keys and Enter button don't do anything.

(P.S I'm on a different computer if you haven't already guessed)

Sorry, I forgot, it's laptop.
When you booted from Recovery Console CD, at what point were you stopped?

The Recovery Console CD didn't stop, I followed all the steps and it said it worked. Then when I restrated it, it stopped at the User Select screen again.

I see...
Which Seagate tool did you burn?

I got the "SeaTools for DOS v2.07 (Graphical)" on and I chose the - Download SeaTools for DOS (ISO CD-ROM Image) option.

Did I get the wrong one?

Nah. That's correct one.
Maybe bad download/burn?
You may want to retry.

The problem with Toshiba is, they don't provide HD diagnostic tool. Seagate tool seems to work on many Toshiba computers.
Try Hitachi tool.
