i want to get linux for my computer without buying another computer, so can i switch between xp and linux?

Ubuntu (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) can be installed alongside Windows without even creating a separate partition, if you want to give it a shot.
It's also a liveCD, so you can just boot from the CD and give it a whirl.

Many distros of linux have GRUB.
It gives options to boot.
What kind of and what purpose you are getting linux will affect your decision.
But in case of linux, you have to try to you find one which you feel is best for you.
