do you belive it will happen on dec 21st 2012? I think there is a good possibility because the people that predicted this have been right about everything so far..

The Long Count Calendar of the Ancient Mayans ends on Dec 21 2012. There isn't much information regarding what the Mayans thought would occur in 2012, but the consensus of opinion is that there will be great change. There is zero scientific evidence that anything will happen, but there are numerous things that could easily threaten the human species in the year 2012, such as a geomagnetic reversal, asteroid strike or supernova. Or soemthing more intimate, like a flu pandemic, or a nuclear war.

when has an ancient civilization who slaughtered and killed their enemies and would start wars "just for the *censored* of it" (Garland Wars) ever had an ounce of credibility over the science of modern times? Have these people heard of science? I guess some people would prefer to listen to a dirty old man wearing a eagle suit and prancing like a ninny talking about how they haven't sacrificed enough virgins then actually questioning his motives for all these virgins when nobody has actually see him sacrifice any, and he's been using an awful lot of the community's tying vines.

remember y2k? this isn't any different. Take something small (a calendar made by some civilization doesn't go on forever) and make it huge (OMG, the world will end!).
Did it ever occur to anybody, that they got that much done, and they thought figured that maybe their descendants would add to the calendar when necessary?

Well the 2012 thing could mean something else besides the whole "Judgement day" kinda stuff.
There was a special on the history channel on Nostradamus and 2012. And said how there was a bibical refrence to that and how the "End of days" could just mean a change, instead of armegeddon.

I don't see the significance of that, since they clock the sun as having 4.5 billion years left. And it won't matter then anyway- since most of the other stars will have burned out too, so, assuming we even have the ability to travel through space, we would have nowhere to go. (warranted... we'll probably be there if so...)

Well if you ever took physics you would know that the sun is made up of hydrogen, and as the hydrogen burns, and the center of the sun compresses it slowly turns into helium which is not as heavy as hydrogen. So the sun loses mass.
The rate of mass loss is 4 x 10^9 Kg/s. That is 4000000000 kilograms / Second. And the mass of the sun is 1.98892 × 10^30 Kg (about 1.988920000000000000000000000000 Kilograms).
So...can you figure out what I'm trying to say? Anyone wanna take a stab at how much time the sun has before it has no mass?

The sun is about halfway through it's main sequence, or "life". It is estimated that the sun is about four and a half billion years old.
Scientists predict that the sun will last about ten billion years as a "main sequence" star.
In another four and a half billion years, the sun will enter a Red Giant phase in it's life. During this phase, it will evelope the the three inner planets. So Earth will actually be swallowed by the elderly sun.
For thousands of years, as the sun expands ever close towards the Earth, the temperature will steadily increase. Global warming will take on a whole new meaning as the oceans begin to boil. This is the good news!
Every piece of flora and fauna will be completely obliterated before the sun actually swallows our rock into it's fiery depths.

I wasn't purposefully keeping an old calender. I moved into my house during January last year and just got around to unpacking a few of the last boxes and happend to discover the calender. I will be listing it on EBay as a historical prediction to the end of the world if any one is interested. You can "Buy it now" for the low price of $1 trillion dollars.

How so? the various interpretations of bible are how the various sects of christianity came about- Catholics interpret it to somehow mean that you can pay the church to get into heaven, or that there is this dude called a pope (don't see anything of that sort written in there), then a certain few people who read the bible (after it was translated) figured- "*censored*- I don't dig your interpretation, dawg, It don't say no thing about paying the church no indulgences, yo. (note, medieval accent not 100% accurate), so the church was all, "you's all bustas" and promptly excommunicated them. Now where was I? Anyway- each sect of christianity simply believes in a different interpretation of the bible. The language used in the bible can be ambiguous when read nowadays, and it requires a lot of reading between the lines and interpreting metaphors. The problem is, a lot of the things they don't agree on aren't as cut and dried as a possible misinterpretatation of the U.S constitution, namely, the "Every man has a right to bear arms" which could easily be misconstrued as being able to mount a pair of bear arms on the wall, or, phonetically, the right to wear a muscle shirt. Of course- it's not ambiguous since such interpretations are silly given the context of a countries constitution. the different intepretations of the bible aren't so cut & dried, and rather none can be declared "right".
In fact, any religion with a book that uses various metaphors and stories that are open to interpretation by the people who read it are going to have problems with having an official meaning to each one. Islam has various sects as well, with different interpretations of the Koran, (wherein I don't believe it states anything of the sort, "Strap many bomb to self- go to enemy. Explode. Many virgins await you." directly- but some believe it does, through metaphor.

The metaphors, I think personally, are the best bits of the Bible. (sounds like the metaphors are a book). The way the Bible has been translated by uptight, torquemada type monks with no real grasp on sprituality makes it rather strange to read. I'm not going to go into this any farther. I have my own personal view on religion and the Bible and I don't want to start anything.
Back on topic....err......yes, the world will end, one day. My advice is thinking, worrying about the future is a waste of time. Concentrate on the Here and Now.

All of the modern "Gods" and "Son's of gods" are based on the sun and its cycles, don't believe me? Look it up, I'm not going to explain it, I don't believe in the end of the world by biblical means anymore than I believe that there is a man up in the sky, watching everything you say and do. A man, mind you, who loves you, yet, so many suffer? That's absolute ludocracy in the most literal sense, religion is a joke, its a farse at best. Albeit, a very elaborate one, very elaborate indeed.
To further elaborate on how little I care about people believing the end of the world is coming on 2012, I will be doing the same thing I always do during new years and throughout the days of 2012; That being, whatever has to be done, same as i did on 6/6/06, gamed through the first days of 2000 as a kid, I'll probably do the same through 2012 just to laugh. This crap is a farse, pure and simple. But hey, if I'm wrong, and the world ends, at least I can get the final laugh if I see you, because you'll be burning with me in *censored*.

I love the insistence of the people with web-sites like "Survive2012" they are 100% positive that the world is going to end. It's almost sad, really- because there were "experts" (read: people who like pointy things) that were 100% sure the year 2000 would be the end of the world too. And I'm fairly sure similar BS circulated in 1900,1800,1700, and on and on (of course, without the internet such crap had to flow downhill instead of being flung at the speed of light all over the world). I find it most hilarious simply because they are basing this on something the mayans, thousands of years ago, carved into a rock. I thought we were smarter then that? Sure, they were great astronomers, but they were highly spiritual, so much so that I bet they had goofy superstitions, like "remember to crap on a face-down howler monkey before going to bed, or you'll be attacked by an Jaguar". All I can say is thank god they didn't write anything like THAT down- otherwise we'd have a "www.craponhowlers.com".
