I have 1 CD/DVD ROM/Burner and when i plug in the DVD data cable it wont let me have power.. but when i just have the power cable hooked up it does
-
Is the cable set up correctly pin1 to pin 1 etc? Is there other drives in which both may be set to Master etc?
-
Just one drive... and they are tightly secured... but its whenever i have a data cable plugged in that the DVD ROM doen't seem to have power.
-
Make sure the drive is jumpered to Master...

The image is a hard drive but you get the idea.
Is this a flat ribbon cable ? ?
If so buy a new one...they do go bad.

make sure the drive is jumpered to master...? I actually have about 10 of them that i used on this one just to see if it is cable, its not...
-
is this a SATA or ide drive? If it is a SATA do you have it installed at the end of the SATA data cable? truenorth

kutless, While i am in the process of becoming newly acquainted with SATA (due to a recent acquisition). Apparently there can be only one SATA device per Data cable. So not knowing if the SATA cable provided in your computer has more than one connection point, apparently only one should be installed(device) per cable to the motherboard. Because my computer did not include SATA cables (power or data) and i have yet to purchase them i was concerned that your cable might have more than one connection available. truenorth

Its has one more connection in the middle of data cable

The second... My DVD R is kinda old
-
Then it is NOT a SATA. It is an IDE drive. The guidance given earlier from Patio and others re the pin settings (Master, slave, cable select) and positioning of the IDE ribbon cable (the one you have identified now as your type) vis-a-VIS the positioning of the #1 pin now become relevant to your problem (again).truenorth

I'm sorry for the trouble i cauzed.. I have never had to mess with a DVD ROM before so its kinda new info im getting.. I was under the impression that I had SATA sorry.
-
kutless, No problem. I you never made a mistake you would be the 1st person to do so.However now that we know the type of device and the connections it requires i would urge you to verify the placement of your IDE cable and check the location of the jumper pins. Then report back and tell us what has happened.truenorth

Ok, well at the sametime (if you have not seen my other post) my computer is not working properly maybe because of the RAM.... but i'll try and test it.

The ribbon cable has a key on top of it to prevent this...take your time next time around.
