Title: .NET 3.5 SP1 update
Post by: patio on February 08, 2009, 07:24:46 AM
Along with other reported problems and glitches with this latest Update from MS i've found out it also installs to Firefox without asking and with no opt out offered....

On top of being quite aggravated at this tactic i suggest staying away from this update until further notice.

patio.

As always whenever making Registry changes be sure to create a proper backup beforehand.

I got the 3.5 SP1 update when it was released, and got a nasty surprise when I saw that extension.
I Googled and managed to remove it, so far it's not made a reappearance.
To say the least, I was not impressed.

This update also has a tendency to break Automatic Updates...did that happen in your case ? ?

Didn't cause any problems with me at all, other than the Firefox extension.
If by Automatic Updates you mean the actual automatic way, as in Windows installing updates without my intervention, I don't use it anyway, I update when I want to, so I wouldn't know if that was broken in fact.

Gotcha...people who have it enabled have reported no longer being to get auto updates and in a few instances have failed the verification tool process...
What a mess...

Sounds serious ... if I'd realised there were so many problems I'd never have installed it, I'd have been too worried.
Just sounded like a routine update, so I didn't research it.
May have to leave this update out when I reformat, I might not be spared the wrath of Microsoft next time.

Well- I have the framework installed from my install of Visual Studio 2008- and I never noticed anything like this. Must be with the redistributable, I suppose...

Ooops... Nevermind- I don't have the SP, that's probably why.

thanks for the heads-up, Although since installing a SP to .NET takes hours were almost any other SP takes a few minutes, I wasn't really planning too. But I will now avoid it for the time being.  ;D

I haven't looked around to see for sure but I think it's related to IE8 because it was listed along with the IE8 Release Candidate.

Now, let's make something clear.
We're talking here about 3.5 SP1, right?
I have 3.5 (no SP1) listed in "Programs & Features", and I don't see any extensions installed.

That would be my guess- I have .NET 3.5 and don't have any extensions/plugin.

Hmm, I installed it in my Vista notebook PC on 1/30/09.  I'm not aware of any adverse effects or anything different in Firefox.  What, exactly, is it that may appear in Firefox as a result of installing it?

And, as I recall, I've had automatic updates notify me of updates, mainly Windows Defender, since I installed .NET 3.5 SP1.
