Title: Winlogon issue?
Post by: suptt on February 11, 2009, 09:34:56 PM
I was going through the programs that autostart on my computer and I accidentally deleted one that brings up my start menu and desktop.
When WinXP starts, my wallpaper and explorer come up and that is it.  In order for me to do anything I have to use the cmd prompt and find the files in explorer.
Please help!

What EXACTLY did you delete?
Did you try System Restore?

I didn't delete anything I went into autorun in the AVG system Tools and accidentally stopped windows from autostarting the task named SHELL.  I think that is why when my desktop comes up the only thing there is explorer.

I have my laptop running the same AVG8 internet security and that Autostart named SHELL seems to be the only one that could do this.

You can't stop Windows service from within AV program.
Once more; did you try System Restore?

There is no reason to be a cheese about it, I appreciate your help.  I would just like to think that someone of your knowledge could find a way that is a little more detailed than putting a CD in.  Thats all

I'd appreciate, if you won't use foul language.
The link, I provided gives extremely detailed instructions, much better, than I can provide.

I actually found the file that is not running.
Location
\INI\system.ini\BOOT\SHELL
Path
SYS:Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

What do you mean by not running? How did you find out?

I kept looking at the files that were autostarting each time I boot up my other computer and they are all the same except on one PC I have that SYS:...... file and on the other I dont.

I wouldn't play that way.
You can try....
1. If you have Windows CD, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp

2. If you don't have Windows CD...
Download Windows Recovery Console: http://www.thecomputerparamedic.com/files/rc.iso
Download, and install free Imgburn: http://www.imgburn.com/index.php?act=download
Using Imgburn, burn rc.iso to a CD.
Boot to the CD...let it finish loading.
When the "Welcome to Setup" screen appears, press R to start the Recovery Console.
Then, follow the steps from here: http://icrontic.com/articles/repair_windows_xp, starting below this picture on page 1:

If the above doesn't work, run repair installation.

the windows repair should fix the issue. an issue you *could* fix manually- but it's like you have a magic wand that can fix almost any car problem and yet insist on replacing the head gasket yourself...
