Title: Damaged cpu?
Post by: jeffr3y on March 10, 2009, 03:24:23 PM
I was wondering if some one could give me a couple basic steps to pinpoint whether or my cpu is working.

My power supply works.
The power switch on my case works.
The heat sink fan works.

My keyboard does not light up.
My mouse does not like up.
I cant get on board video (bios) to display.
I have a video card that I cant seem to get a signal though to the monitor with.

OS:Win XP
Motherboard:
Gigabyte 945gcm-s2c
Cpu:
Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHz 2MB LGA775
RAM:Corsair VS512MB533D2 512MB DDR2-533 (2 sticks)

My guess would be power supply or the board. Check all connections first

Sounds like the motherboard to me
But start with the free options... Can you get a old power supply to try and test it with?

Well like I said the power supply does turn the fans on..also the drives..

This is a brand new out of the box mobo.

I guess I can go buy one try to a new power supply. But what is the theory behind the power supply? I'm guessing that maybe you guys are suggesting that maybe its not powerful enough?

It can still be bad if it just powers the fans and stuff.  Just because its putting out power doesnt mean its good.  Can you try to get a free power supply to test instead of buying one?  And wouldnt it be easier just to return the other power supply instead of buying a new one if you really have to?

I would guess thats a yes (at least someone did) due to the motherboard

I've had to replace several power supply's in the past..Most of the time when they go out they pop and smells like electrical fire or something. That wasn't the case here.

No I cant get a free one. I guess I could try to return the one I have back to micocenter. Its been about a year though.

Did you build this ? ?
  Yes.

What happened before the problem occured

This all started 5 days or so after I had to replace my old power supply with the existing one I have now.
I replaced the power supply with success and everything worked fine. Then about a week later I cant get bios or anything to show on the moniter.Just a black screen. When I disconnect the vga cord it will give me the "no signal" message.

What one uses gigabyteS?
Whichever maker can get the Gigabyte boards cheaper than any other board.

Anyway, to add to the original post about the PSU, Just because the PSU spins fans and HDDs up, does not mean it is outputting enough to boot the whole system up.

Try booting with the most minimal setup:
No HDDS/CDDs
No expansion/PCI Cards
One stick of RAM
CPU
Keyboard+mouse
Screen
Also if you can remove the Graphics card and use onboard graphics.

If this works then add components one at a time till you find which one it it that is causing the system to not boot.

OK so bit of progress today. I think so anyway.

I replaced the practically new(5days of use) in the box power supply.

Old:
COOLMAX model:V-500 power supply.

New:
BFG 450-Watt ATX CPU Power Supply

Alright that's what I been doing from the get go.

At first start with the new PS I got bios up. (PS,MOBO,1 stick of RAM,Keyboard)
Thats great because I count get that with the other PS.

Then I thought to myself well ok great...Let me try with 2 sticks of ram this time.
Power off, Inserted the 2nd stick rebooted and back to the black screen.

Powered off, took cmos out waited 5 mins, took the stick out and tried again. Worked got bios.
Look briefly for on board video option...didn't see one.

The got the idea I should try and detect the HD. Plugged the  hd in while the machine was on and got it to dectect. Rebooted and got back screen again.

Unplugged HD, took cmos out again and rebooted with basic bios start up. Nothing black screen again.

God I'm going crazy over here. :'(

EDIT: Alright now that I got bios to show.. I guess that means my cpu is OK right? If so should I start a new thread?  :P :P

RMA the mobo for a new one...That is just odd, but it does happen occasionally, sometimes products are DOA (Dead on arrival)

Thanks again for all the help on this. ;D

Ok, today I drove down to micro center again and replaced some parts.

Motherboard: GA-EP45C-DS3R 775 ATX Motherboard
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0298098

PSU: Xion 630 watt.
http://www.microcenter.com/single_pr...uct_id=0287568

Installed chip,mobo,power supply,Ram 1 stick(512-ddr2 553),Video card.
booted the pc 90% sure I would see bios. Nothing.. black screen again.

This is my 3rd pc Ive built.. the first couple builds went flawless..I've never had any wacky problems like this..*sigh*

I don't even know what my next step is going to be..

I'm thinking about taking the rig to a friends to try and hook up on a newer lcd monitor..This old monitor works great with my old dell I'm using atm.. but maybe has issues with new parts or something.

So it could only be 3 things at this point right?
vga,cpu,monitor.

I'll prolly end up rebuilding an entire system just to figure this out. lol..
