Title: noob needs some help please
Post by: Primer88 on March 14, 2009, 02:24:56 PM
This forum was recommended by a member of another site since I wasn't able to find a fix there.  I tried doing a search on here but didn't find what I needed.

The computer is a Dell Inspiron 6000 running Windows XP and I think it has the service pack 3 update.  We are using Firefox 3 as well as IE occasionally.

little history.

Thursday (3/5/09)  this computer contracted MS Antivirus 2009. I followed the online instructions to remove most of it from www.spywarevoid.com . I then downloaded and installed PC Tools Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic and Privacy Guardian Friday morning and each of them have been run several times before this problem started.

Monday when I got home from work the little red Windows alert shield with the white X was in bottom right hand corner was there and it turns out the Windows Firewall had been turned off.  Before this computer picked up MS Antispyware my fiance turned the firewall off so she could download some songs from Limewire (yes I know limewire is awful but it's her computer and won't change it unless she gets another free download program  :-\ ).  When she did that, AVG's free antivirus software was installed.  The MS Antivirus stuff was uploaded to this computer from an email sent out of her account to my email after it was hacked and sent to EVERYONE in her address book.  AVG didn't catch it.

In any case, this is what happens when I try to turn the firewall back on

I click close, go to the control panel and try to fire up the firewall that way.

I click ok and get this

any idea what's going on? This has never happened with ANY of the other anti-virus/maleware/spyware programs that have been run on this thing in the past.  This also wasn't an issue when MS was causing me problems.

Thanks for the input!

Uninstall Spyware Doctor, Registry Mechanic and Privacy Guardian.

Download ComboFix© by sUBs from one of the below links. Be sure top save it to the Desktop.

Link #1 (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe)
Link #2 (http://subs.geekstogo.com/ComboFix.exe)

**Note:  It is important that it is saved directly to your Desktop

Close any open Web browsers. (Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc) before starting ComboFix.

Temporarily disable your antivirus, and any antispyware real time protection before performing a scan. Click this link (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic114351.html) to see a list of security programs that should be disabled and how to disable them.

Double click combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished ComboFix will produce a log for you.
Post the ComboFix log in your next reply.

Important: Do not mouseclick ComboFix's window while it is running. That may cause it to stall.

Remember to re-enable your antivirus and antispyware protection when ComboFix is complete.

If you have problems with ComboFix usage, see How to use ComboFix (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix)

If you already have MalwareBytes then Update it and run a new scan.

.
Extra Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts, click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process, if asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately.

You have Viewpoint installed.

Viewpoint Media Player/Manager/Toolbar is considered as Foistware (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Foistware) instead of malware since it is installed without users approval but doesn't spy or do anything "bad".

More information: It is suggested to remove the program now.
Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs and remove the following programs if present..
----------

Open HijackThis and select Do a system scan only.

Place a check mark next to the following entries: (if there)

R3 - URLSearchHook: Yahoo! Toolbar - {EF99BD32-C1FB-11D2-892F-0090271D4F88} - (no file)
O2 - BHO: WormRadar.com IESiteBlocker.NavFilter - {3CA2F312-6F6E-4B53-A66E-4E65E497C8C0} - (no file)
O4 - HKUS\S-1-5-21-1267350296-2131423099-1365823090-500\..\Run: [OE_OEM] \"C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\Internet Security 12\TMAS_OE\TMAS_OEMon.exe\" (User \'Administrator\')
.
Important: Close all windows except for HijackThis and then click Fix checked.

Exit HijackThis.

How is the computer running now?

Thanks for your help!

I removed Viewpoint media player

I ran hijackthis and found all 3 of the items you listed and followed your instructions.

Computer doesn't seem to be running much different than before.  What's next?  The firewall still does not work.

Thanks for your help and patience.

Before you begin the SDFix instructions you should copy these instructions in a Notepad file and save them to your desktop or print them for easy reference. Much of SDFix will be done in Safe mode and you will be unable to access this web page after booting into Safe mode.

Download SDFix by AndyManchesta (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/andymanchesta/SDFix.exe) and save it to your desktop.

When using this tool, you must use the Administrator's account or an account with Administrative rights

* Now, double-click on the SDFix icon that should now be residing on your desktop. If a Open File - Security Warning box opens, click on the Run button.
* A window will now open showing SDFix being extracted into the C:\SDFix folder.
* Once the installation program has finished extracting SDFix, it will open a Notepad with further instructions.
* DO NOT use it just yet.

Reboot your computer in Safe Mode (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/tutorials/tutorial61.html) using the F8 method. To do this, restart your computer and after hearing your computer beep once during startup (but before the Windows icon appears) press the F8 key repeatedly. A menu will appear with several options. Use the arrow keys to navigate and select the option to run Windows in "Safe Mode".

When your computer has started in safe mode, and you see the desktop, close all open Windows.

* Click on the Start button, click on the Run menu option, and type the following text from the Code Box into the Open: field then click the OK  button.

Code: [Select]
C:\SDFix\RunThis.bat
* SDFix window will open containing some brief info and a disclaimer on the use of the tool.
* Type Y on your keyboard and then press Enter to begin the cleanup process.
* It will remove any Trojan Services or Registry Entries found then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
* Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
* When the PC restarts, the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
* Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt.
* Copy and paste the contents of the results file Report.txt in your next reply.

ATF Cleaner (http://www.atribune.org/ccount/click.php?id=1) by Atribune to your Desktop.

Alternate download link (http://majorgeeks.com/ATF_Cleaner_d4949.html)

Note: Vista users must use Run As Administrator (http://vistasupport.mvps.org/run_as_administrator.htm)
Note that your system will run slower for a reboot or two after having used this tool so don't panic.

----------

Download OTCleanIt.exe (http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/oldtimer/OTCleanIt.exe) and save it to your Desktop.
.
Important: Restart the computer before continuing.

----------

This scanner works with Internet Explorer only!

Scan with the BitDefender Online Scanner (http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html)
Click I Agree to the license and then install the ActiveX control.
Please DO NOT change the Scanning Options.
That will make your logs huge and we don't need to see clean files.

Select Start Scan to begin.
This scan can take a while so please be patient and let it complete.

Once BitDefender completes the scan:
Click-on the Detected Problems tab.
Then select Click here to export the scan report

This will save a file named bdscan.html I would suggest saving it to the Desktop so you can easily find it. (take notice of where you save it so you can find it later)

You will have to upload the file online. The forums will not accept HTML.

Go to File Dropper (http://www.filedropper.com/)

Click Upload
Locate the file and double click it.
Copy the link below Share This Link: and post it back here.

That is part of ComboFix.
Title: Re: noob needs some help please
Post by: Primer88 on March 15, 2009, 06:12:39 PM
ran bitdefender and it didn't find anything so I could not generate a report.

I had to uninstall spyware doctor when I uninstalled combofix and left it uninstalled until after running bitdefender.

The firewall is back on now and I have re-installed spyware doctor.

Anything else?

Maybe Spyware Doctor was interfering with the firewall?

Use the  Secunia Software Inspector (http://secunia.com/software_inspector) to check for out of date software.
.
----------

Go to Microsoft Windows Update (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com/) and get all critical updates.

----------

I suggest using WOT - Web of Trust (http://www.mywot.com/). WOT is a free Internet security addon for your browser. It will keep you safe from online scams, identity theft, spyware, spam, viruses and unreliable shopping sites. WOT warns you before you interact with a risky website. It's easy and it's free.

SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html) - Secure your Internet Explorer to make it harder for ActiveX programs to run on your computer. Also stop certain cookies from being added to your computer when running Mozilla based browsers like Firefox.

I will go through that stuff in a moment.

A few things are not working properly in Firefox now.  My comcast.net home page will not work properly now nor can I check my email.  Also, another forum website I frequent has a chat box at the top which will not load now.  Both of them work fine with IE though.

Also, I've been using WOT in FF for a long time now.  Thanks again for your continued help!
Title: Re: noob needs some help please

Run Secunia and see if anything needs updated. Then see if the updates fix Firefox.

If not then let me know.

Also give me a link to the forum where the chat box isn't working so I can test it and try to figure out what's wrong.

Also run Dial-a-fix. It may help with the Comcast problem.

Download Dial-a-Fix (http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles) by djlizard, save it to the desktop then extract it to it's own folder.

.
Is the problem fixed?

I'm having problems with some of the updates from secunia.  I'll have to deal with the rest of this stuff tomorrow.  I've got work in the morning.

Thanks again for the help.  I'll restart everything from your first secunia post again tomorrow.

OK just let me know which updates you are having issues with.

Also did you run Dial-a-fix?

I have not had a chance to run dial-a-fix yet but I was able to successfully run the Windows updates (from Microsoft) over night and the problems I was having with my home page and virtualford have gone away.  I will continue the work on the other updates and the other things you suggested when I get home from work.

The firewall has stopped worked again.

You might just consider using something different.
