Title: Blue Screen when unplug USB HDD
Post by: Dark-Myth on March 15, 2009, 01:38:47 PM
BSoD when I unplug my Portable USB HDD
    I have a SP3 comp
everything works perfectly, including my portable HDD, until recently I unplugged it while it was installing an update, and i got a blue screen. funny, but normal usb drives dont do anything when i hot swap it

same issue as(even same error msg)
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Hardware/Desktops/Q_24164678.html

except my HDD is portable IDE, and not SATA
i decided to hotswap it, and after a period of extended use(works fine if u just plug it in and unplug it within a few mins), BSoD comes up.

error screen is attached

Has that update successfully installed at another time?

It is generally better to cancel the update than unplug hardware in the midst of one.

well
the problem is, that update never properly installed
everytime i install it it comes up with an error with some sort, and it tries to install the next time i shut down the comp
i suspect it's the same update all this time
and i unplugged the drive when windows had logged me off, was installing the update and about to shut down...

have i done some kind of taboo?

You haven't done anything most of us haven't done at one time or another.

If you have the original operating system disk, see if you can boot the computer from it, and perform a repair.  The repair should correct problems in Windows without erasing any existing data.  You have to follow instructions carefully, though.

Let us see if we can find a "walkthrough" for you.

The instructions HERE (http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.html) are pretty easy to follow.  The deal is that you don't want to use the Repair Console to repair Windows -- at the correct point, you press the Enter key, and Windows will go on to launch the repair sequence.

Once you get Windows working again, you can try installing updates as necessary.

If you have more questions, don't hesitate to ask.

urm

windows still boots fine, just when i plug my usb HDD in, and unplug it, the blue screen comes up

so u guys suggest, i fish out my windows disk, and perform a repair?

i have SP3, but the installation CD is on SP2, will that affect it?

i have PQ magic 8, will that be enough as a HDD heal software?

and urm that update happens to be a IE7 update that never seems to install due to "files from the package are incompatible with the files on ur system" for some reason

Before you resort to a Repair Install try running chkdsk /f on the external first...

do i type:

Run --> chkdsk F:/ /f?

and repeat for G:/ and H:/ [these r the drive letters for them btw...]?
