Title: 500 mini usb
Post by: johnha169 on March 16, 2009, 01:24:44 AM
Hi, there, can anyone tell me that a mini 500 GB is possible, I purchased one actually, when I plugged into the computer, it did show that the volume is 500 GB, but a friend of mine said that it is impossible to make that usb because it is so small, usually I saw the 500 GB is a square like box, but the one I bought is the little one like the 1 or 2 GB, is it a crap usb but I just don’t know why my OS show is it 500 if it is not, I tried the usb in 2 of my computer and the computer in my school, it shows  500 GB,  any comment about that usb
I wanna test it whether 500 GB is the actually capacity, do you guys know is there a method of testing  it
Thank you very much.

in addition, i copy 0.5 GB  to the usb , it took nearly 20 or 25 minutes to complete, curently using 1.6 GHz , 756 ram, is that the acceptable/normal speed?
thank you

Go to My Computer, Right Click your USB Drive icon and click on Format.
Have a look at what capacity it allows you to format the drive in. (DO NOT CLICK ON THE FORMAT BUTTON)

How many files did you copy?

Just fyi, the military are using 2TB (2000GB) SD Cards:

Nice. A 500GB Flash Drive. What brand is it?

Probably why it was slow.
Look at it this way.
Transferring a 500MB single file will be faster than transferring a thousand files, equaling to 500MB.

Plonkers are being pulled here, or else it is one of the well known fakes that are advertised on ebay etc.

You can tell how capacity it really has by copying files over into it until you get an error.

Where did you get it?

Of course, you can't buy a 2TB card right now. Instead, SDXC is the new spec from the SD Association which allows a theoretical maximum of 2TB, meaning the way has been opened for manufacturers to offer bigger and bigger memory cards for cameras.

cards may come out by the end of the year.

You mean 2000gb.

4GB SD Cards have been out for a loooong time, let alone 2GB.

Oh, I know what you mean.

Every year, our school offer's USB Flash Drives to students.

For the past five years, they have been getting cheaper, and large in storage.

They're up to 4GB for $50 HKD.

Inside the drive is a fake controller chip, programmed to report 500 GB.

Why? To make money.

At first, I was sceptical that they made 500GB Flash drives, which is why I asked earlier:

At first, I was sceptical that they made 500GB Flash drives,

Fusion-io makes SSD (solid state drive) cards in 160GB, 320GB and 640GB capacities. A 1.28TB card is expected out in the second half of this year. Current pricing is quoted as "well under $30" per usable GB, which makes the biggest current card "well under" 19,200 dollars. How much "under" is a good question, since pricing is probably a matter for negotiation based on size of order. So only very specialist users will be using them.

They are not pen drives or memory cards as this picture shows.

We didn't change it, we developed it. We informed the OP that he or she almost certainly had a fake, and then we went on to discuss big flash drives. I myself posted a jolly interesting picture.
