Here's the system:
PCChips M741 series motherboard with on board sound and modem-actually the modem is a little mini modem that plugs in on the motherboard rather than an expansion slot. Only ONE expansion slot available. We upgraded to W98SE and have tried numerous drivers to get the modem working-no luck...sound drivers work though.
Intel Pentium III
86mb ram
8gb Hard Drive
Win98 SE
I just installed a Rockwell HCF 56 modem in the one expansion slot available but Windows can't seem to find it. I'm wondering if there's a bios setting that is preventing it from seeing the modem. The numbers next to the expansion slot are: PC11...no clue what that means at this point, or if it's helpful information.
This is starting to be a real pain...it also has an onboard ethernet adaptor...it also doesn't install...very strange.
Any help GREATLY appreciated.

Still investigating here...the onboard modem worked prior to our clean install of W98SE...it's feeling like pilot error here. :-[
Device manager sees the modem after installing it, but the OS doesn't recognize the driver occasionally, stops installation, etc.....when it does recognize and allow driver installation, control panel diagnostics doesn't see the modem...since we have nothing else other than the OS on the computer, we may do another W98 install...still thinking this through.

Thanks for links Merlin...a bit of patience and the PROPER drivers have everything in good order here!...modem, ethernet adaptor all work perfectly. Also found an updated video driver that cleaned video up as well. ;D
