My wife is using Apex fitness bodybugg program which required recent version of Java. She downloaded it, prob 5 times, anyways the Apex program is continually telling her she needs it. She has restarted the computer, I've checked under programs, and Java is there, and I have Internet options, security and privacy both at Medium. Are one of my malware, spyware, anti virus programs causing the problem. I'm using IE7 and XP. Unfortunately the Apex program cannot run with Firefox. Any ideas?

are you sure it's Java it needs, and not JavaScript?
Medium security, I believe, disables Javascript.

"Internet options, security and privacy both at Medium." - the privacy and security settings for IE and Firefox are unrelated. There is a Java checkbox in Firefox you should er..check - Tools/Options/Content.
Does Java fail to respond in both browser or just one? Test it here http://www.javatester.org/ (http://www.javatester.org/)
Check security settings in any firewall or internet security suite you have installed.

Sorry, it's late and I'm obviously not reading carefully enough. You've already ruled out Firefox....
