Title: Video and Audio starts to stall.
Post by: Tim on April 28, 2009, 02:57:31 AM
Hi,
Sorry if this has been discussed somewhere else I have searched and browsed but haven't found an answer yet and I didn't know which place to post this so I'll start here.
My problem is that recently after playing videos and audio files - including .avi, .mpeg and .flv as well as audio files such as .mp3 - the image and sound will start to freeze for a second and then continue and a few minutes later it will happen again and then start to increase in frequency until the image freezes completely or in the case of mp3 it will sound like a skipping cd.
I have this problem when playing files if I use VLC, Windows media player, Media player classic or the asustek asusdvd player so I don't think it's a particular software problem, none of these players gives me any kind of error warnings.
I have tried uninstalling and installing the latest versions of the necessary codecs. I also thought that there maybe a memory issue but I don't know much about that so the most I have been able to do is empty some space on the hard drive and I defrag regularly. I have also updated all my drivers that I can.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

Pre installed O/S
 Windows XP
 Professional
 Version 2002
 SP3

ASUS A6Km
AMD Turion 64 mobile
1.80 GHz, 1.00 GB RAM

AVG anti-virus free edition

How much free space on that HDD ? ?
When's the last time you ran diskclean and defrag ? ?

Are these files all on the HDD ?
Do music CD's do the same thing ? ?

If so check to see if the vid card fan is operating properly...

EDIT: Oooops laptop...clean all fan ports out.

Also, check to see your hard drive is not running in PIO mode, as this causes the CPU to handle I/O requests, and floods the CPU Bus, causing stuttering.

The laptop is about two years old now but I've never had a problem, this has only happened in the last couple of weeks.

There is 8.28 gig free on the C drive.

I use CClean at least twice a week and Diskeeper at least every other day.

All files have been run from the laptop hard-drive from folders and from the desktop as well from an external drive and a thumb drive same stuttering result every time.

Cd and dvds don't seem to have this problem.

Ports really do look clean, I've given them a dust but no debris.

I have checked through this and all drives are running with the dma setting as described on that link.

Thanks for your you advice learnt a few things I didn't know, but they don't address my current problem, any further ideas would be greatly received.
