Title: HELP! I've lost the RED colors!
Post by: RocketmanVT on May 03, 2009, 02:23:14 PM
I'm using Windows 98, standard version, and I've lost the red colors in all my displays. The video card is fine - it shows reds when I open the monitor's control panel to adjust colors...
I deleted a few files from the TEMP (TMP) folder, and some from Temporary Internet Files folders, and may have screwed up settings...Also, all of the icons are now positioned all on the LEFT of the desktop display, whereas I have some on the left, some in the middle, and some to the RIGHT of the desktop.
What have I done? More importantly, HOW DO I FIX THIS? ??? :P ::)

All the icons being positioned on the left is quite normal, you probably just chose to sort your desktop icons. Although I still don't quite understand what you mean, could you post a screen shot of what your problem is?

Helpmeh,
I don't know how to take a screen shot of my desktop...

I mean, I have no red color at all  - the "Y!" for a Yahoo shortcut is BLACK, not red, The "STOP" button on my toolbar is grey, pictures (JPEGs) look all sorts o' screwy...NO RED shows up on anything.

Press the PRTSCR key on the top row...open Start >Programs >Assessories> Paint ... Edit...... Paste
Sometimes the key is labled Print, or Print Screen, or PrintScn.

Taking a screen shot won't work - I can't do it, apparently.

Have I deleted a settings file, which tells the computer to display reds?

Check for bent pins on your monitor cable......swap for another known good one if you can. Assuming it's a CRT monitor, a missing color is usually due to a failed gun, bad video cable, or video adapter. Check your connections.

Are you sure you are doing it correctly?

You need to paste the screenshot into paint and save it, or we can't see it.

I haven't been able to take the screen shot - no button says anything remotely like PRNTSCRN...I don't even have a printer installed (it went toes-up last year.)
I thought about using another monitor, but that doesn't explain why all the icons got shifted to the LEFT-HAND side!

Check for bent pins on your monitor cable
Bad cable is the most likely cause.

Sounds like you may have hit auto arange on your display to put the icons all on the left. If you want to put them back where they were just point to icon you want to move, hold down the left mouse button and drag it to where you want it. After you get them positioned the way you want them right click the display & click line up icons.

Thanks to all who've replied to my li'l problem - especially Karnac and Broni...You were right - it was simply a bad connection at my cable! (|
I have a cable extension on my monitor, and it must have gotten kicked loose somehow...So much for panicking, eh? And now I get to see ALL the nice, bright colors!
Jeez, you woulda thunk I'd try that simple little check myself, before going off the deep end... :||
