Title: No sound --device manager says card is working but. . .
Post by: mcwoode on May 12, 2009, 02:54:45 PM
No Sound.  Either from speakers or working headphones. Windows XP SP2, already tried the fixes on this forum.  No option in BIOS for sound card (or controls for sound card are under a different listing that I'm not aware of). According to Hardware profiles sound card is working fine. no hardware conflicts. However, in control panel under audio icon audio properties is in grey and indicates no audio installed.  Delete, modifications buttons for audio drivers under the system device manager is in grey won't allow me to delete.  Deleted hardware in Device manager, computer found card. Can't or don't know how to delete drivers to allow windows to reinstall. Downloaded and installed a more current driver for card--didn't fix problem.  I get soft beeps for error for postings in Quickbooks but in no other software.   When try to play Cd's get this error 0x00D11BA--can't play file.  No other programs that I know of are using device when this error is displayed.  This was working last week! Please help!!!!Thanks.

What kind of sound card did the computer find?

Is your sound via built-in / on-board sound, or is there a separate sound card installed?

Mcwoode, I had that exact same problem with a computer I was fixing. Finally, in desperation, I downloaded a diagnostic program for my hard drive, burned it to a disk and ran it. About 3/4 way through the program I received a "do you hear the song" . Sure enough, my sound problem was fixed.

it's a sound card on the motherboard. According to the device manager a Realtek AC 97 Audio card.  Device manager lists 2 sets of "legacy audio drivers". Tried to delete them but right click and properties does not leave any options for deleting. Downloaded driver from net for this card, didn't fix problem.  Any ideas? Thanks Mcwoode

I have a Compac EVO desktop with the same card. The first issue was the drivers, then open the audio controls (spkr) icon and check to see if the audio is on mute.

Simple fer sure but that was it.

Thanks.  In the control panel when I click on the sound and audio icon it comes up grey--no audio device installed (and I know there's a sound card on this system!!). tried to download and install a more current direct X driver and it wouldn't let it install something about a corrupted CAB file.  Any ideas??? What's a CAB  file??? Thanks
