Title: Computer won't boot up after a Power Failure today.
Post by: dhwv on June 03, 2009, 10:38:09 PM
First let me give as much basic info that I can remember right off the top off my head.

My computer is a Gateway 7200XL, running Windows XP.

Recently had one of my two hard drives fail, so I was running just off the one.

Anyway, earlier today the power went off abruptly and was off for a few hours.  Well after the electricity came back on the computer will not boot up at all.  I get no message at all.  You know how that when you first turn your computer on how the fan sounds like it is running very fast before settling down and going ahead and booting up; well this is what mine is doing.  I can't get to safe mode, BIOS, Restore or anything.  The screen just stays black.

I would appreciate any suggestions.  I will check back tomorrow for any responses, it is a little late and I need to hit the sack.

Thanks in advance.

How old is the computer?

Is there any indication that there is power to the monitor...(power light)?
Have you plugged the monitor into a different outlet, to try?
Are you sure the monitor data cable and power cable are securely connected, everywhere?

Was there any lightning/thunder, when the power went off?

Most likley the power supply or mother board or both. Iwould replace the power supply first with equal wattage or greater.
