The piratebay isn't all illegal, right? And not that I think it is right, but some people think torrent sites like this are good.
For example:
As I said. I do NOT promote illegal torrents.
I just want to know what your thoughts on torrent sites. Do you think they should stay, or all go away?
-
They should stay. They are fighting a loosing battle. They will never get rid of them all. And it really depends on what you download. They are just search engines almost like google. I completely agree with the picture though. But instead pay then download?
-
Well, the problem I have seen with pay then download is that if you need to reinstall the computer, you need to buy the game again. Not all people are smart enough to put it on a cd/dvd these days.
-

GET OUT. I just don't believe you at all.
On the other hand that would explain a lot of these posts....
-
haha you don't say? ::)
-
I'll have you know that a great number of the voices in my head thought that was funny.
-
Torrent search sites are not illegal, nor should they be.
Just because I can find illegal content on a search engine, does that mean that the engine should be shut down because of its content?
Well, I guess that means no more ... Google, Bing, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, Ask (expand to include every single search engine).
I use Mininova and other torrent sites a lot, for Linux distributions and other large free software packages ... much easier than going to each individual website to find the torrent.
I don't understand how reformatting your hard drive and reinstalling Windows means you need to buy a game again though ...
-
The opening post hardly presents a fair comparision since there are plenty of applications that can be purchased and downloaded legitimately. It's not EITHER illegal torrents OR full packaged products.
-
I believe one should be able to try a product in its fullest, if this means illegally obtaining it, sobeit, just so long as you buy it if you actually decide to use it.
-

That's exactly why there are DEMO versions. There is no excuse for pirating, ever.
-
I agree with all of you! Torrent sites are fine, just some torrents are illegal.
Now, Calum. I thought that when you reinstalled, you lost the game and had to buy a new licence for it. Can you download it more than once? Well probably, but not on all games. Right??
-
Nothing's wrong with the idea of torrents, just people put onto torrent illegal things. You lost a game and had to buy a new license.... couldn't you contact customer service with your proof of purchase if you still had it?
-

That's what I'm asking you ... I don't often download games, I tend to buy them on a CD or DVD so I don't accidentally delete it or something.
I did legally download three games a few weeks back but I don't know how the licensing works ... I believe one of them (Crysis Warhead) lets you install it five times before you lose the license, but there is a tool to deactivate a license (so when you uninstall it, run the tool and it gives you back the license you used in installing it, if that makes sense).
I haven't really looked into this or tested it by madly installing and uninstalling it to see if I lose my license, I'd like to play it at some point heh.
-
for me, I have a few apps I bought online- all you need is the key. download the installer from the developer, install it- enter your key, it authenticates the key and your entered username, and installs and authenticates. Absolutely no hassle at all.
-
where i bought games you can reinstall up to 7 times on your own or other pc's , or you can choose to buy the cd
-
bc..that sounds like a good idea. a username. ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
bc..that sounds like a good idea. a username.
I can't believe somebody else thought of that, that's MY idea!
-
well why didn't you say ssomething? teehee... ::)

I think the right to limit the usage of software you lawfully purchased gives someone even more of a motive to pirate it. Its like that crap with the limited version of Windows 7 coming out, it limits the amount of programs you can run, and therefor, limits the amount of data the CPU can process, therefor, it is entirely illegal.

I think people who don't have intellectual property of value shouldn't be saying who has the "right" to steal it.

You need to pull your head out of your... ...fridge, or just close the door really hard, repeat as needed.
If they write it, and you want to use it, follow their rules. If you don't like crippled software then BUY the full version.

First, that doesn't make it illegal, and second, there was a version of XP and Vista with that too. it was called, the "Starter" edition. And it was extremely cheap (maybe even free, I forget) in some countries. And lastly, I don't see how "limiting the amount of data the CPU can process" is illegal; as such as proclaim that your deduction is flawed.
-
and in windows 7, the restriction on the number of programs you can run in the starter version has been removed. :P
-
Limiting the amount of data that flows through the CPU is a violation of some international law or something, I can't remember, I read about it a few years back.
-
Why would they make that? It has no point1 We are goiong to want to open more programs and use as much of our cpu as we want!
-

because it's cheaper and half the time run on older hardware anyway... in fact that was half the point of the OS.

Most demo's don't let you do much. So their quite often useless.
Now, Calum. I thought that when you reinstalled, you lost the game and had to buy a new licence for it. Can you download it more than once? Well probably, but not on all games. Right??
I've seen alot of games out there that can only be install once on the pc they were downloaded with.
-
Well that would ruin microsoft faster than a fat man tumbling down a hill!
-
Microsoft can do whatever they want, they are one of the corporations leading this world by the hand. Don't even think for a second that they care about a little loss. Notice how you don't hear anything about them being hurt by this recession? A recession, which, at this rate, will be a full blown depression in a matter of years if things do not change mind you.
-
what recession?
I'm sitting on over a grand right now... that I dunno what to buy with. I'll probably just save it some more.
-
What recession? Where do you live? The bottom of a cave sitting on a treasure chest full of near worthless items that amount to a thousand dollars? Places are closing down, stores are cutting inventory, and employee's, its a full blown recession here in the United States.
-
its a full blown recession here in the United States.
Ahhh, there it is.
It sure as h*ll isn't full blown here, that's for sure. Last week I got a raise, actually. And the lower the U.S dollar dips the higher the Loonie goes; and although that has mixed effects both positive and negative it has one effect of making some of our goods that are imported from the U.S cheaper, so I can buy more.
I haven't seen a single store closed down, or cut inventory or employee's. in fact, everywhere appears to be hiring.
-
Yeah, there is no recession in Canada (at least not in British Columbia where me & BC_Programmer live).
-
Well, lucky you, share the wealth... Or not... Obama is a 12 trillion dollar wonder... Man things suck here right now.
-
So canada is ganing on our suffering?
-
So canada is ganing on our suffering?
It's a refreshing change. The USA has been capitalizing on our economy for a long time. Fair is fair.
-
Stupid United States! >:(
-
Stupid United States! >:(
Heehee, you don't live in the United States. But too bad we're in an economy downturn at the moment.... :P
-

You can send it to me. I'm poor.
Think of it as buying my friendship.
-

Hmm, I dunno.
I'll transfer through western union but I needz a forward fee...
lol
-
but I needz a forward fee...
Is that how you got that grand in the bank.? ;)
-

quiet!
Now JJ, about that forward fee, we both needz to trust each other.
Also I am prince of Nigeria looking to forward much funds to U.S account, but require costs of bank fees here to avoid suspicion.

spammer alert, spammer alert, be aware LOL ;D
in any case, what's been going on with the pirate bay big four? Piratebay.org still is working so I wonder what happened to the pirate bay admins...
-
Thepiratebay is still trying to get people to support them in their court case or something, at least I think.
-
I read the pirate bay will not go down no matter what happens. The servers are located in a place that even the admins dont know where they are! No matter what happens the site will stay
-
w-o-w ???
-
thepiratebay has been sold and has a new owner. The piratebay's new owners want users to pay for downloads (to cover royalties and whatnot) then once the file is downloaded, he or she will be able to get paid to keep on seeding the file..... go figure :P

source?

well that would make me mad
-
source?
Sources ...
1. Direct from thepiratebay itself .... http://thepiratebay.org/blog/164

The new owner's idea, I think is just speculation at the moment, I've also read something about suggesting they'd stick up some advertising to help with money revenue .... but in the end, I think the new owners of piratebay wants to become the napster of torrenting ... :P
-
A:> the one on the TPB site itself simply says they are selling it.
however, the other ones- as you said are pretty much speculation.
They are obviously not learning from history. They won't last long if they require payment; The last thing I'd want to do is pay for trojans. There are a lot of other sites offering similar material- and they will remain free. So I'm not sure what they expect to gain from this.
-
They are going to shrivel up and die if it is a pay site because the smart people in this world don't trust their money to those sites, and will easliy go to a better and free torrenting site. DUHH! :P Definately no gain.

I'm not gonna pay anyone squat for downloadina FOSS torrent, they can go to *censored*.
Do you have a citation?
-
I'll give 'em a Citation, run 'em over with it, sure, the Chevy Citation may be small, but I could manage. At least park it on them ;D
(http://static.howstuffworks.com/gif/chevrolet-citation-3.jpg)
Personally, I don't think its a bad looking lil car. A lot meaner than modern hatchbacks. It is, however, front wheel drive, which would pose a problem when running the new owners over. 'Cause, there body mass would be elevating the front of the car... Oh, I know, run 'em over in reverse!
-
Nah, that's what a 797 was built for....
-
Now whats the fun in running someone over in a truck so big you wouldn't feel a house under its wheels? Let alone them...
-
You don't just do it once though, the 797 is meant to repeat as needed, like shampoo...
