Okay... I managed to reinstall my XP SP3 OS without backing up (or even taking a note of) the drivers I need. Ridiculously stupid, I know, but irksome nonetheless.
Thankfully, I am an Xfire user and submitted my game rig details fairly recently. Thanks to this, I managed to get my graphics card drivers reinstalled but it's been of no help to me with regards to audio.
My sound card, according to Xfire, is "SoundMAX HD Audio O". Having googled this with the word "drivers" and downloaded the most suitable file, it tells me during installation that it is the inappropriate driver. I have tried numerous other solutions based on google suggestions before finding my xfire info that camer to no avail.
Any suggestions on what to do? I've tried to give as much detail as possible but I will try my best to answer any questions.

Is this a name brand computer? If so post make and model.
If not.
Is your sound card integratd? If so post the model of your Motherboard.

My PC was an own build from eBay so I assume the sound card is integrated into motherboard. It's an asus board but not sure of the model number, how could I find it?

Take the side off your computer and if the sound plugs look like they plug into the motherboard it is integrated. If the sound plugs go to a seperate board that plugs into the motherboard it is not integrated.
You can look on your motherboard for a model number. Also you can try my batch file. It will create a file systeminfo.txt wherever you run the systeminfo.bat The batch file will popup and clise quickly then create systeminfo.txt which will have a log of your system info.

Or just look at the documentation that came with it, that's usually easier than a disassemble...

Please let us know the device ID detail of which you wish to obtain the drivers. The details can be obtained using the following steps:
1) Right click on the device which is listed under unknown devices in Windows Device Manager list.
2) Then choose Properties Option and then from the Properties menu click on Details Tab.
3) From the details Tab provide the details mentioned under Device Instance ID or Hardware ID at Description Column.
For example: PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_29B2&SUBSYS_2818103C&REV_02 etc.

Im really sorry but I can't find a debug info line. I downloaded the Everest Ultimate edition, booted it up, went to the Report dropdown and compiled a quick report in Plain Text.

This is what you need a driver for...it will depend on your OS you are running.

I've downloaded and installed stuff from the nVidia site but to no avail....
EDIT - That is to say, all the drivers I've found are for display and suchlike.

You can find the other drivers that you will need at the Asus (http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us) site. I would suggest using the 'Asus Navigation Wizard'.

The Navigation Wizard isn't working for me in either Firefox, IE or Opera....
I've also scoured the site and downloaded what I thought were the appropriate drivers but they have not worked either.

i think windows xp has a creative sound blaster 16 driver
if you install that semi generic driver
atleast you will hear some sound (may not sound great but its sound)

Have you any links to where I might obtain it?
Quality of sound is not an issue at the moment, not having any audio to play music however is driving me mental!

comes with xp
go to device manager
choose your sound device
click update driver
choose creative as the manufacturr type
and choose one of the sound blaster drivers (pref. sound blaster 16 as its the most compatable)
and finish the installation
reboot and hope your sound is back
