I got the error message fix but when its converting you get no video but sound works. The video uses the H.264 codec that supports Avc1 from ffdshow but when i disable that codec and try converting Winavi says cant decode this! maybe the file is broken or the Relative decoder not installed, when i turn codec on it converts but no picture. The file work on Vlc media player, so i don't think its corrupted. It came from torrent

so you are trying to convert a video file you have downloaded off the torrents?

Does the winAVI software work with other files?

avc2avi (http://www.videohelp.com/tools/avc2avi) --> maybe give this software a test, it converts h.264 to AVI. Have used it before on one file successfully. See if that gives you working picture to go along with the working sound.

Didn't work it gave me a crash message that avc2avi had to close but it did give me a 18 megabyte file but it didn't play and its way off from the original size of 1.91GB. Is there a program that will rip video and audio in separate files that will keep the 5.1 sound and merge 5.1 sound into another video file

I'm not sure about an audio/video splitter, but you might want to try this:

I've had a lot of success with this program.
