Title: Pioneer CD/DVD drive problems =(
Post by: hotjoester on August 23, 2009, 03:36:43 PM
Hello everybody ;D
Okay so I bought a new CD/DVD drive last week.
But the problem is, everytime  I play a CD in it, my songs will play for a few seconds. Then the green light on the drive will light up and my song will freeze. Then Windows Media Player will go to the next song. That song will play for a few seconds and then the same thing will happen. I know it isn't the disk because I tried playing a brand new disk in it and still had this problem.
I posted this question on yahooanswers and they told me it was just a bad drive. So I returned that one to bestbuy and got a different one.. and i'm still having the same problem.
Does anybody have an idea of what the problem is??

Note: I'm using Windows XP.

Thanks for any future responses! =)

I'm guessing there's a setting in the software you're using to listen to the music to just scan the first few seconds of each song.

Yes, it sounds like the OP is pre-viewing the songs rather than playing them.

thanks for the replies guys =)
that would make sense!
but the drive i had before this one, [the one that died], i never had this problem. i used the same program which is windows media player and everything played perfectly. could the settings have automatically changed since i'm using a new cd drive?

I just can't see that being a change that would result from a new optical drive.

What program are you using to play the media?

Will you stay out of this.  Hardware will not likely cause this.  Don't offer advice until troubleshooting is finished please.

Tell me what steps you are following to play the disk.

By the way, how does it work with video media?

1. I insert the disk.
2. I open windows media player.
3. I go to Play
4. I click on the track i want to play
and that's about it. =)

When it comes to video media, it's just as bad. I tried playing a DVD last night and it skipped like crazy.

Open up your case and double check all of your connections.

Disconnect them and reconnect them to make sure.

Is this SATA or EIDE?

and what is SATA and EIDE?? LOL i'm really sorry i'm just not very smart with computers.

So you didn't install the optical drive yourself then.

By case I mean the computer tower, the thing that everything plugs into.

I can give you step by step instructions for this if you would like.

1. Turn the computer off.
2. Unplug the computer.
3. Disconnect all of the devices going to the tower.  Make note of where your speakers plug in.
4. Using a pilips screwdriver, open up the left side of the tower, that's your left when you are looking at it from the front.
5. Lay the computer on the side that isn't open.
6. Touch the case before you reach inside, everytime you let go of something inside the case, I want you to touch the case as you reach for something else.  This is IMPORTANT.
7. Disconnect each cable that you see(going to the optical drive.), ONE AT A TIME, and then plug them back in where they were.  Some of them may require you to apply firm pressure.
8. Put the computer back together and test it.

thats assumeing that its not the kind like mine where you have to
remove the motherboard to take out the cdrom or plug in the plugs

Except for a laptop there isn't a case that this can't be done on.

thanks! i'll have my dad help me with this tonight when he gets home from work.
btw
i don't know if this is important to know or not but i do have another drive hooked up as well and it's defective. on the top drive is my new CD/DVD drive and on the bottom is an older one, that doesn't work. Could the older one be interfering with the new one, giving it these problems? The defective one didn't interfere at all with my last CD drive but I still think that this might be worth mentioning.

Definately take out the one that doesn't work.  There's no point in having it in the case at all.

if we take that one out though, the wires and everything of my computer are going to be exposed through where it use to be hooked up. can that be dangerous or anything?

No, the cables are protected.  Just don't reach into your computer while it is turned on.

Also the case panel opening can be covered...they are snap in plastic plates.
Stop by a PC repair shop they'll probably give you a handful of them for nothing...

Great catch man, I forgot that would leave a gaping hole there.
