Title: Absurd amount of programmes running???

I have recently purged and resurrected the lives of 2 family computers running on XP - thanks to the gr8 advice received from this site.

My wifes brand spanking Acer laptop started playing up. So I gave it the deep clean/spy/mal ware treatment etc etc

When running hijackthis (log attached) it tells me I'm running in the region of 79 applications...

Is this normal? It strikes me alot of this is Acer cr*p and add ons that could sit at the back until called forward - but I'm a little wary of disabling some stuff on vista. It pains me to say that her new laptop is alot slower than our older machines....

The analysis log keeps telling me that a firewall is not running/latest service pace is not installed - ddespite the fcat that I have updated  the sp and comode states it is all running well (however it does seem a little quiet when running inside vista????) Is this normal????

give http://www.pcdecrapifier.com/ a try. Worked great to clean out the crap from my laptop.

You have 17 startups (in HJT they're O4 entries).
Some of them can be disabled:
- IgfxTray
- Persistence
- SunJavaUpdateSched
- SUPERAntiSpyware (don't disable, if you have paid version)
- WindowsWelcomeCenter
Simply re-run HJT, checkmark the above entries, and click "Fix checked" button.

Also, I assume, you run Comodo firewall only, not AV and firewall?

mine has tons of crap too
it doesnt bother me that much

Well, there's no sense in keeping all the stuff put on a new computer by manufacturers (programs, desktop shortcuts, etc.) that you know you don't need.  And, since this unneeded stuff may include some programs that run in the background, those could be degrading performance.
