Title: no device driver selected
Post by: bigbass on September 23, 2009, 02:27:52 PM
HI ALL,

oldbe here...Trouble with XP, Did the FDISK and format, used the floppy win98 to do this, left it in the A: drive reboot and used win98 disk to install the OS system, this what came up,no valid cdrom device drivers found, win98setup files not found, Device driver oemcd001 not found, OAK technology. Tried the floppy in another PC and it showed the files, so I think the win98 floppy is good. This is a old PC, P11 450 MHZ Memory 640MB HD 13.5GB, I tried to use xp by it's self to see if it would boot, no good...
Partition C:, state A, type PRI-DOS, Mbytes 12966, SYS fat32, usage 100%
At the C: prompt type WIN and enter Bad file, Bad Command,A:/ typed DIR C: showed that there was files there, tried SYS C:, EXT.EXE, Findramd.exe all said bad file bad command.....HELP.....Thank you for your time...
Bigbass.... :)

DLoad a fresh one from bootdisk.com...
Grab the Win98SE one.
Extract the DLoad to a fresh floppy...

P.s. You don't need to install Win98....XP will ask for an older version...at that prompt simply put in the Win98 CD and setup will continue...

 Hi Patio,

Went to Bootdisk and Dloaded win98se oem to my downloads folder,I clicked on it and it said currant image format is not supported by disk drive...

Than I right click on it and sent it to my A:/ drive to copy it, took it out and put it in the floppy drive and started my pc, it said to remove any media and restart, did that, no good, tried to go to the A: prompt would not let me, kept saying abort, failed, What do you think......

 Thanks

Link Fixed (http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm) is the one you want...
You will need an extraction program to create the floppy correctly.
7Zip is FREE.

Sorry 'bout that...you want the Win98SE OEM one...

1.  Objective.  You never clearly stated your goal.
    a.  To install (and use just) Windows XP ?
    b.  To hard drive containing just one partition ?
    c.  Using FAT32 or NTFS filesystem ?

2.  Windows XP CD.  Which CD do you have?  What "exactly" is printed on the CD?

3.  Boot Order.  Is the BIOS (thru CMOS setup) set to boot CD-ROM drive before hard drive?

Objective...  To install an OS system, I have Win98 disk witch is oem, I have a win98se witch I used before and also have winXP Pro corp..witch I had on this

1.  Make and Model Number.  What is the make and model number of the computer, if brand name; otherwise make and model number of motherboard (e.g. "Gateway G6-350") ?

2.  CD-ROM Drive.
     a.  Is this the original CD-ROM drive ?
     b.  Have you successfully booted from this CD-ROM drive in the past (on this computer) ?  From which CDs ?
     c.  Is there more than one CD/DVD drive on the computer ?

3.  Windows XP CD.
     a.  Which CD do you have ?  "winXP Pro corp"...   I would expect an "original" Windows XP Professional Corporate CD to boot...
     b.  What Service Pack level is it at (e.g. RTM, SP1, SP2, SP3) ?
     c.  How "exactly" is the CD labeled (more precisely what identifying information is written on the exterior of the CD) ?  Also include anything like "VRMPVOL_EN".

4.  CD Boot.  You said the XP boot was "no good".  What did you observe?
     a.  Does the CD-ROM drive light come on briefly during system startup?
     b.  Does the CD-ROM drive light come on and off for longer intervals as if it is reading the CD?  Do you think system was reading the CD?
     c.  What informational and/or error messages display during CD boot attempt?

MAKE---MICRON Electronics
Model--SE44BX2-P11450-MT--ATX
Mother Board--512KL2 cache
Original CD Rome drive--Pioneer DVD 6.0x w/Software Decode

Yes have booted from this CD before--Microsoft WIN98--OEM
Yes--Have a HP CD-Writer Plus # 8250i

Not going into all the CD that I have that worked at this time,I will use
the WIN98 CD for this install and if I need to upgrade I'll use the other
CDs

Service pack level was SP2
CD Labeled-Microsoft Windows 98 For distribution with new PC only for product support contact the Mfg of your PC

Yes--the light comes on briefly
no it doesn't come on longer intervals and when it tries to boot is says
no valid CD ROM device drivers selected, device driver not found OEMCD001

Made new boot disk, WIN98se OEM from Boot disk still would not boot with WIN98...This sys has been formatted as one drive C: I did run a service scan on C: no bad clusters,no problems with this drive....
I think it's reading the drive until it can't find the device driver to load Win98
as it loads the diagnostic tool in drive D:

Thank you

1.  Operating System.  You intend to install Windows 98 (First Edition) from your Microsoft WIN98--OEM CD.

2.  Boot Device.  If you've booted the Win98 CD before "directly" from the original CD-ROM drive, that's the path you should take.  "CD-ROM" should be listed in BIOS as your first boot device.  This means you would not be using a Win98 floppy boot disk (so it shouldn't even be in the drive).

3.  CD-ROM Drive.  I see no evidence that you're successfully reading the CD.  I'd say you aren't even accessing the CD-ROM drive, except I'm not sure what the light flicker on system startup means.  I think BIOS is searching IDE bus looking for the presence of devices.

Start with the POST diagnostic screen and verify the CD-ROM drive is properly identified by the BIOS and note how it reports location on the IDE ports.  Location probably indicated on screen as:
o  PM - Primary Master      (IDE port 0 - Master)
o  PS - Primary Secondary (IDE port 0 - Slave)
o  SM - Secondary Master (IDE port 1 - Master)
o  SS - Secondary Slave    (IDE port 1 - Slave)

Post how the diagnostic screen reports what device it finds on the IDE channels (ports).  Maybe someone has suggestions on how to configure CD-ROM drive (IDE port and drive Master/Slave/Cable_Select jumpering) so BIOS boots from it.

To display POST diagnostic screen during boot, enter CMOS setup and "enable" Boot-Time Diagnostic Screen from Boot Menu.  While you're there "disable" Quick Boot Mode.  Ensure First Boot Device is set to "ATAPI CD-ROM Drive".  Save changes and exit.

The PC would not boot anymore so I put in the microsoft win98 boot disk and ran fdisk and then format, left the boot disk in and re-started the pc with the win98 os and from the point it would not boot into the os...

The cd rom is listed as the first boot and the H/D as second...

I guess you are right in that the cd rom is not working or I should of been able to boot into win98..

I'l go into the BIOS and look at what you want to know..

Thanks

Is the floppy drive listed as the "Third Boot Device" ?

I'm not positive you have a "bootable" Windows 98 CD.  I'm taking your word that you have "directly" booted to this CD in the past (without the assistance of a boot floppy).

Hello,

The floppy disk is the third boot device

I don't remember if I booted with the WIN98 by it's self, but I did use the cd to install at one time...

First boot is ATAPI CD ROM Drive....I'll get back to you when I get the other info...

Thanks

it flashed WIN98 screen and went to C: prompt.....

From what I understand I should be able to boot this PC from UBUNTU CD
witch I have as it has it's own drivers, I tried booting from Ubuntu and could not boot...I don't know if the cdrom is bad or the H/D is bad, I would think
if the H/D is bad than I wouldn't get anything on the screen..I don't know...

Thanks

OK, What I'm going to do is use the HP CD Writer Plus, thats in the computer
and remove the CD Rom, set the writer to master, plug in the cable, make sure sure
the BIOS is set to boot from the writer first, boot with the UBUNTU CD and see what happins...

Thanks
