Title: Battlefield 2
Post by: Raptor on June 12, 2005, 02:03:00 PM
Who of you is going to play Battlefield 2?

I do not have a lot of experience with recently released games, so I would require the opinion of someone more trained in that area... I am wondering wheter I should or should not buy Battlefield 2. I do not think that my system configuration is up for it. It may fail on me.

Here are my specifications:

AMD XP +2800 (2.097Hertz)
1024MB DDR RAM (Dual Channel @ 333MHz)
Gigabyte 7N400Pro mainboard (Nvidia chipset)
ATI/Radeon 9800Pro 128MB

Other less relevant specifications would be:

512DX Trust soundcard
80GB 7200RPM 8MB cache Maxtor
400 Watt Chieftec Dual Fan PSU.
52X CD-ROM Reader.
-- I am forced to give in and install a DVD-ROM reader soon..

What do you think my chances are of running this game smoothly? Battlefield: Vietnam did not run all too well, but then again, that entire game was pap. Battlefield 1942 ran very decent, though. Bit laggy, but I have a 6MB connection as opposed to a 128KBs connection when I used to play online.l

If you are going to play BF2, on what kind of system will you be running it and what do you expect of it?

Raptor, the game looks like it will be a smash hit! From what I see on the reviews, many people are excited, and many are VERY stisfied wiht the graphics and sound quality! As for your requirements, it looks to me like they check-out... I think you'll be ok... If you are still concerned, go to the Electronic Arts website, and go to support... Submit a ticket, and let the technicians tell you...

The technicians will most likely tell me that I meet the minimum requirements.

Are you planning on playing Battlefield 2, Flame?

Well, once the Dell monkeys send me my Desktop (July 11-13) , I'll be able to, so probably, yes.  ;D

It will most likely run very well on the system you have ordered.

I hope there will not be too many foggy areas in Battlefield 1942... Somehow, my computer has never been able to adequatly handle these conditions and it slows down. I suspect the AMD processor. Which is generally pap.

I should give the demo a shot. How does the game run for you, Colonel_Sanders?
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: TN2COOL on June 14, 2005, 10:37:10 AM
I advise you guys to buy a new graphics card.. Geforce 6600 or Geforce 6800 will run it on all max.. Flame's new computer has a geforce 6800 AGP and that would run it on really high resolutions.  Raptor, you might be ok there playing the game on medium to low, it won't be as satisfying, but the battlefield modding teams are planning lots of great mods!! My personal favorite will be a WW2 mod.

I play it on lowest settings but it still looks ok and at least i dont get any lag
here is screen shot i took with the unlockable .50 sniper

Is that online or are you playing with bots? And if with bots, how many bots can you handle before it starts lagging? One more, when you get in a vehicle does it start lagging?
Usually jets lag alot..
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: colonel_sanders on June 14, 2005, 11:43:08 AM
I have absolutely no lag at all, and your not suppose to have that weapon or any of the other unlockables but on one of the online servers i was playing they had them, so yes that is online multiplayer, the number of bots you can play with is 15+you, but thats all for the demo, but in the real game you can get more
here are some more screens
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/56342/screen006.jpg)
In this one i killed someone with the shock paddles that the medic gets
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/56342/screen005.jpg)
In this one i snuck up behind a sniper and knifed him
(http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y300/56342/screen002.jpg)
In this one i shot a portable guided anti tank missle at a T-90 tank

If you want any specific screens of weapons in action or just more screens just ask

What are your FPS at these settings? And what do you mean by unlockable?

My demo is at 93%, so I will be able to install it soon.
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: colonel_sanders on June 14, 2005, 12:05:40 PM
I have no idea what the fps is, but the game runs perfect, the screen shots were taken at the lowest possible settings, and what i mean by unlockable is in the full version you can gain ranks and through gaining rank you get weapons not availible to the other players that havent goten to that rank, i will post pictures of all the unlockables

First screenshot taken at 1024x786 @ 60Hz, 0 x AA, Medium settings.

Unfortunately, Fraps was corrupted so I could not see the FPS the game ran at. Does anyone remember the command to show FPS in BF1942?

Second image taken at 1024x786 @ 75Hz, 2 x AA, High settings

The first settings ran very well.

however, it had its occasional hic-ups with the second configuration. It did not run all too well when I was facing a direction with a lot of open space.

Loading after changing your video configuration seems to take a very, very, very long time as well so I made a sandwich in the meantime.

Well I'm still trying to decide if BF2 is good or not.  I loves 1942 and the combat mod.  I didn't like vietnam at all.  So far I'm impressed with the graphics, sys reqs and units but the jury is still out on vehicles.  Has anyone found out how to change the # of bots in a single player game?  My netspeed won't allow for online play and there's too few bots which makes the map too small.  I like to fly and there's not enough room for arial combat.

I've been looking at BF2 today, it looks tasty.

Can't say to much as I haven't played the demo yet,
but some of the screen shots look amazing.

Just one question, i only have 512 ram min, will this be enough to play on, I also have Sti radeon 9550 256mb graphics card with a 2.somthing GHz processor ?

I made a mistake, I thought you had 256MB RAM. Nevermind, it should run quite decent with the system you have. Have you tried the demo yet?

Rap: little better than dialup.

I used to play BF1942 on 128KB/s cable and 32 players would, depending on the time of the day, cause lag.. However, it would run smoothly most of the time. 64 players was a big no-no, though.

Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: colonel_sanders on June 27, 2005, 01:06:31 PM
Ive played the demo and the full version (which i have now), the Demo is good but only has one level on two different sizes, the demo time limit is 12 minutes per round with 3 rounds until it reloads the same level, the full version is worth it and is prety fun and best of all it has no time limit, plus you can gain lots of ranks, medals, badges, and ribbons in the full if you play on the ranked server,
If anybody has any questions about the full or the Demo dont hesitate to ask
BTW Dice canada made BFV and Dice sweeden made BF1942 and BF2

Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: Raptor on July 02, 2005, 02:21:15 PM
The game runs incredibly smooth. Offline, that is. Have not yet tried it online. It's amazing. Not even BF:V or BF1942 would run this smooth.

What bothers me is that they, once again, force me to use alternative controls. As the Delete/Home/End platform seems to be in use by common controls even when it is not.

I have been using WASD and I must say that I can much quickly access certain features, however, I can't reach the CTRL key, in order to duck, using my pinky without getting cramps. Frustrating.

BFV had a faulty code and thats why it sucked, and go to the bf2 official website, they said that the unchable key thing will be fixed so you can change them how you like them, so it will be fixed in next patch
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: Raptor on July 03, 2005, 04:41:57 AM
BFV had faulty code? Some people really enjoyed that game. Must have been the Huey with the *censored* radar. You know I didn't find out the Huey had a radar until I quit playing the game.

As for the keys.. I think I'll stick to them. I do notice an increase in speed when accessing weapons and other commands ,such as Spotted.

What I definitely will need is a 5 button mouse.. Unfortunately, I bought a 3 button mouse not too long ago.

Edit --

How do I zoom in with the sniper rifle and how do I decrease the number of bots in a game so I can learn to fly?
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: colonel_sanders on July 03, 2005, 10:06:28 AM
Zoom in by right clicking, On any rifle you can right click so it will bring up irons so you can shoot more accurately, and i have no idea how to decrease bots

Mine is normally about 300.  ???
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: Raptor on July 04, 2005, 01:13:57 AM
I believe people like you have a name... You HPB! ;D

You may lag up some people with slower connections and jump over the screen of people with faster connections.

As for zooming.. You're right, I liked the sniper rifle in BF1942 better. Just place the dot on where the bullet had to land. Now you've got daft symbols that are only in the way. Good thing that most sniper rifles are (semi)automatic, though. Just fire away.

How do I unlock new weapons in single player?
Title: Re: Battlefield 2
Post by: colonel_sanders on July 04, 2005, 03:53:41 PM
The People who made Americas Army (An army recruitment tool) said that the only thing that affects lag is the servers ping, not yours, and even though people will blame bad lag on you because you have a high ping, in reality your ping isnt affecting them at all and its there and the servers fault for the lag that they are experienceing
And i dont remember how to unlock weapons in single, you have to change something
You have to change
0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 to 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1
I cant remember what file it is in though, sry, but ill try to find it

go to

open it up using notepad
change the 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0 to 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1
then save it, this should give you all of the unocks in single player

Nice, thanks. Unfortunately, my game computer is currrently... Disabeled, to say the least. I am dedicating it entirely to high performance so I first have to clean the hardware properly before I put it back together and pray that BF2 will run smoother. Loading seems to take forever, especially the identifying client data. Is that PB's doing?

You can probably use the default account which does not seem to require a password.

But I very much doubt anyone would buy BF2 for single player. The bots can't get anything done unless they're on the enemies side.

Increasing Singleplayer Bots

To increase the number of bots used in singleplayer mode, go to your \Program Files\EA Games\Battlefield 2\mods\bf2\AI directory and open the file aidefault.ai with Notepad or Wordpad (make sure to create a backup copy of it first). Read the instructions in the file which basically involves placing the word REM in front of each of the first 5 lines starting with 'aiSettings.set', then removing the REM's in front of the next 4 lines starting with 'aiSettings.set'. Change the number at the end of the aiSettings.setMaxNBots 32 line to determine the number of bots to use (e.g. aiSettings.setMaxNBots 64 for 64 bots). Note that more bots can really stress your system and hence destabilize it, causing a crash back to desktop - particularly for those with older CPUs. For example, 64 bots on most systems will cause a crash.

I have a question about Battlefield 2.  I have a pretty good laptop that is able to run Battlefield 2 on the lowest settings fairly well.  However, sometimes I get button lag where I'll tell my guy to stop running but he'll keep going.

Now someone told me that you can have the screen shrink to where the computer will run faster and that will take care of the problem.  However, he didn't know how to do it.  Do you guys know how to do that?  I'd greatly appreciate any help.

The only time you need to use a password is on the online account.  You can create a single-player account on Battlefield 2 that doesn't require you to have an internet connection at all to play single player.

Another question.  To unlock the weapons in singleplayer, what program do you need to open and edit the unlocks.py file?

Screen shrink? You can adjust the resolution, but there is no other way of making the screen shrink

Unless you meant windowed mode, which occurs when pressing Alt + Enter. However, the game may stop responding or it may not respond to the command at all.

Sorry, I didn't know what it was called.  Anyway, the Alt-Enter didn't work.  And I figured out the Wordpad thing, but I've already installed the patch.

Anyway, do you have any other ideas on how to make the game run better?  Also, if I were to play on-line with a good internet connection, would the game likely play faster, slower, or the same?  Sorry if this is a stupid question.  ???

You may also wish to disable shadows and dynamic shadows as these require a lot of processing power.

If you have a good Internet connection then online play will be faster since your computer does not have to load and use the bots. However, more than 16 players or a 32/64 player map may cause performance degration as well.

Post the complete laptop specifications you have for comparisment.

You open it up in note book, then edit the thing i said, it wont work if youve already downloaded the patch

There are 2 of these bracketed groups in the code: [1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1, 1].  Do you mean to change both of them?

I've already disabled shadows and dynamic shadows, actually everything was automatically set for the lowest settings when I brought it up the first time.  As for the online question I was able to get on with a really good conection last night and I had tremendous lag problems.  Although that might be because it was a 64 player map.  I'll have to try it on a 16 player map sometime.

Thanks for all your help.

So far, I have found the following bugs in 1.1 :

1. Newbies
2. TKers
3. Idiots
4. When using the Apache or Chinese/MEC chopper you can switch weapons with the right mouse button (if board gunner), however it quickly flashes back and forth giving me an epileptic seizure every time I fly the chopper
5. Heatseaking missiles, from time to time, lock on to friendly choppers with a high pitch noise as opposed to no noise and a negative mark on the chopper. Resulting in angry team mates.
6. I sometimes get run over by my own buggy when I get out and its only slightly moving. This is just plain lame and manages to piss me off every time

Well, so far I haven't found any more bugs. But those 6 need fixing. Perhaps if we genetically engineer the human race, we can easily rule out the first three.

Number 4 was in it before the patch came out, and it happens in all of the attack helis, its very anoying
You can also get killed by a suply crate if its slightly moving down a slope, if it barely touches you you will die
