Did you download and run the .exe file association fix?

Typically only two things cause this problem: either something changed the file association or malware. We've addressed the first likelihood, so let's go after the second. You said you did a full virus scan. Please download and run a scan with MalwareBytes.

If that still doesn't fix it you can insert the XP CD in the drive, go to START - RUN and type: sfc /scannow and press ENTER. All system files will be checked and replaced with their original versions. If that still doesn't do it we can do a repair installation of the OS.

Cant run the MalwareBytes as I cant run the exe file , I tried to do the second task but I got an error saying my CD was an older version of the OS I am running , so I will try and borrow a newer version and try what you told me ,
Many thanks for all your help

The XP CD will have to match whatever Service Packs are installed and version...
IE if you have XP Pro w/SP2 installed that's the CD you need...

Can you run MalwareBytes (and other .exe's) from safe mode?

I tried to run the exe files in safe mode with no luck , I also did the START - RUN and type: sfc /scannow and press ENTER with the XP S/P 3 cd in and still no luck , just wondering if I did a restore might that work do you think ?

If you have an XP CD then a repair install is the next step. Boot to the XP CD and choose the second repair option. Done properly, a repair install does not effect installed programs or user settings.

This will NOT help if your system is infected, but you said you ran a scan with your AV so let's keep our fingers crossed.

A malware expert should have helped you identify and remove this infection before you jumped to a XP repair install as a solution on an infected machine.

There are also precautions to take doing a repair install that were not provided here.

I fear you have already done the repair install and I hope you took steps to immediately scan for malware upon the completion this repair.

With a repair install you also need to check with windows updates upon completion of the removal of the infection to update service packs and such and keeping the computer offline during the repair install and until the infection is removed and then immediately updating afterwords.

I have more information and links if you need my assistance.

Hi
No I haven't done any repair install yet so if you can give me more information on what to do next that would be great ,don't forget I cant run any exe files so I cant install any programmes and run them

You can go ahead and do the repair install. As I said, it will not help if you have malware, but nor will it hurt even if it fails. As the other poster said, you'll have to run Windows update after the install. But there's no reason NOT to it regardless of the tone of that other post. If you want to back up any critical data, go ahead - that's never a bad idea.

Bottom line, you can't even run hijack this or a malware scan, so you're pretty much stuck with your current installation.

Do you have more than one user account on that computer?

Can you tell us which anti-virus programs you are running?

I suggest you post in the virus/malware section and I'm sure one of the specialists can help you find a way to get a scan done as I have seen in other forums with this same situation.

I try to keep my important personal data backed up at all times just in case a stubborn infection or similar happens that could take more time to mess with then installing windows as new. Some stubborn removals can damage windows trying to clean it up and leave a crippled system that has been compromised and may not be secure, you never know what back doors are left open when done.

If I was in your situation it would be one of those times I would install with new partition, full reformat and new install of windows.

Yeah it's a pain and takes me all day but a new fresh windows sure is an improvement over an old sluggish system or one that's been hammered by an infection and removal.

You might reinstall over the old windows and get a removal done before its retaken by an infection.

Have you tried a SFC scan now yet?

Sorry if it seems I have a ''Tone'' about me but most people spend way to much time chasing down solutions when if they had been backed up and ready for a fresh install, in most cases you save time and get back as normal in less time.

This comes from my experience of 25 yrs messing with computers and being in the same situation many times before. Hope it helps  :)

Hi
Thanks for that ,maybe I would be better doing a full install ,the PC is about 5 years old at this stage and could probably do with one ,thanks again
