Title: Word Issue
Post by: wildwood on November 10, 2009, 07:48:33 PM
I recently created a few documents and after saving them the icon for these documents appears as a word document icon with an "i" enclosed in a red circle.

What does this mean as far as my documnets are concerned?
They open and are editable without problem.

Thanks,
Peter

Does it appear on every Word document? Has it always been that icon?

If it does appear everytime you save a document I'm sure it's nothing to worry about (seeing as it works fine).

If it hasn't always been that icon, then maybe you or someone else has recently installed an Icon package or a new Theme?

It does not appear on every word document, only a few. It might have something to do with the way I save a new document. I generally save it as a word document - Word 97-2007. The reason being that the default "save" with Word puts a .docx file name on a new doc. Many people, I found cannot open a docx format if they have an older version of Word. So I changed the default to the older Word format. Now these document icons  have the "i" in a red circle. Where at Microsoft can I get help in explaining this "phenonomen(?)". As said earlier it is not making anything more difficult, but it is something new, with no logical reason.

Thanks,
Peter

I save most documents in .doc format for the same reason (many of my clients don't use 2007) and I've never seen that icon symbol. What's in the balloon when you hover the mouse over the icon?

Hi Allan,
Thanks for your response. I would like to send you a picture of the icon, in question, but have no clue how to do this within this forum. When I hover over the icon it basically just says the name of the file and Microsoft Word document 97-2003.

Do you know how to capture a picture of the icon?  What OS are you running?  Are you familiar with Paint?

Can you post the picture of the icon so we can see it?

It's an i enclosed in a red circle.

The OP says they have a .jpg image of it.  The reason I ask is that I've never seen this icon.

I wonder if it's not an associated icon from a third party application.

One way to attach an image is to click on "Additional Options..." at the bottom of the forum message composition panel you have open when you are preparing a post.  If you open "Additional Options...", you will see a box to attach a file.  Click the Browse button and browse to your file and select it.

The reason I asked about Paint is that it can be used to crop or resize the image if necessary.

Allan, your missing the point; look at it this way, I've heard of people calling the save icon- a floppy disk, the "TV icon" while this might in fact be what we are seeing, it might simply be an interpretation of something else, such as a damaged shortcut overlay.

I'm guessing it's an i enclosed in a red circle ;). The poster is clearly intelligent and I take him at his word (not something I'm generally prone to do, by the way) - but I also hear you - though it certainly doesn't sound like a damaged icon overlay to me.

Ok gentlemen,
I have attached the icon. Since I'm getting oin in years, and the icon is very small, upon closer view it is not an "i" in within the red circle it is an "!".
Does this mean anything???

Thanks
Peter

See, like I said - it's an exclamation mark in a red circle  :P

That means the document has macros.

Wait, this discussion ain't quite over yet.  ;D  I just did a test with Word 2007 in the computer I have running Win 7 RC.  I created a small macro and saved in that document, as opposed to saving it in normal.docx, and the exclamation mark was then attached to the Word icon.  However, it was inside a yellow ... what can I call it ... scrolled sheet.  I've attached a large version so you can see exactly what it looks like.

I wonder whether that icon varies depending on the OS.  I have Office 2007 installed on a Vista laptop also but haven't done this test on it yet.

Soybean, good call.  Is there a possibility that the red circle indicates a problem with the macro?

There's some reference on Google of a white exclamation mark in a red circle caused by MozyHome. Other than that I really don't know - but it certainly doesn't seem to be any kind of problem, does it?

I just did the same test with my laptop running Vista and got the same icon.  I can't do a test with Win XP since I don't have Office 2007 installed with.  I do have Offce 2003 on my Win XP system but, as far as I know, it does not assign special icons to Word files with macros embedded; at least, it has no option when saving to save as a macro-enabled document.

I'm not suggesting there's a problem here.  Just wondering why the difference.  And, wondering whether wildwood has, indeed, described that part accurately, since he did not initally correctly describe the thing inside the "circle".

the icon attached by the OP was a 32x32 icon, rather then a - I guess soybeans is 128x128; it's possible that the icon designers chose to use red for the smaller versions of the icon, but thats just a guess.

Hi Allan,
Now that you mention it.............I do use MozyHome, and have for about a year, but this "icon issue" only came up a few days ago.

From what I read on the web, MozyHome creates those overlays.  I don't know anything else about MozyHome or the icons. You can either look for options in MozyHome to see if there's a way to disable the icon overlays or just forget about it and move on. I'm sure there's got to be something more important you can start to worry about ;)
Title: Re: Word Issue
Post by: soybean on November 14, 2009, 01:19:08 PM
BC, I changed the size of the icons by opening Documents folder in Windows Explorer and changing the size of the icons.  I had the icons set at small size before the change and, with the small icons, the exclamation mark was definitely inside a yellow object.  If I reduce icons back to small size, it remains an exclamation mark inside a yellow object.  So, I don't think icon size is a factor here but I'm at a lose to explain why some users might see the exclamation mark inside a red cirle while others may see it inside a yellow scrolled sheet.

One remaining possibility seems to be the OS.  Is it different with XP than with Vista or 7?  Well, as Allan says, it appears not to be something to be viewed as a significant issue.  When I did a Google search on this, I really found very little in the way of helpful references but enough to verify the special icon appears when a Word file is saved as a Macro-enabled document or Macro-enabled template.

Soybean - it appears that it's related to MozyHome (see the posts above)

Well, I viewed this article, MozyHome Online Backup (http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2284405,00.asp) and saw no mention of such a feature in MozyHome.  And:

Well, whatever ...   I move this discussion be put to rest unless wildwood discovers something new that he can share with us.

Here you go. And it looks like the overlay can be disabled: http://www.vistax64.com/vista-general/189857-white-exclamation-mark-inside-red-circle-attached-every-icon-invista.html

Gentleman,
I believe I've found the answer, thanks to your suggestion.
Its a feature in Mozy Home. Go to config and disable icon overlay.
"The red exclamation point means it is not backed up on our servers but will be when the next backup runs"

Thanks one and all,

So then, as a final statement on one point, it has nothing to do with macros in this case.  I don't believe wildwood ever made a single comment about macros.  ::)

And, wildwood, do you have any insight now into why this just recently started to happen, even though you've used Mozy Home for a year or so?

Hi Soybean,
It seems to have nothing to do with macros. I disabled the icon overlay, on MozyHome", and everything was back to "normal". Newly created word docs did not include the red circle with the "!" , inside shortly thereafter. I have no clue as to why ,after one year, this should start happening.
