Title: pc hangs during shutdown
Post by: gabe810 on June 18, 2005, 10:11:07 PM
well i just recently installed windows xp home on my other pc, and i've had no problems on it at all except the shutdown sequence. it gets the shutting down screen, and then after that the screen just turns blue and my mouse pointer is there but it doesn't move. i've tried everything in the help and support thing in windows and the shutdown registry patch thing, but they didnt work.

help!!!

have you scanned from worms/trojans etc..<best option is safe mode>....winxp is prone for this. Did this happened when you connected to the net??.....the blaster worm ///sasser worm etc.are still doing the rounds.........try msconfig in the run box and chose selective start-up......

yea, i've scanned for worms. no worms or viruses....... and i've been usin selective start up for a while now. the only hardware that i added to it is a linksys wireless adapter for my wireless network. i first started noticing the problem ever since i installed xp on my pc. right after it installed, i didn't put anything on it and the first day i shut it down was when it started. and its happend every single time i tried to shut it down. this never happend to me when i had windows 98 on the pc. eeeeeeeek.......

sorry for not keepin it in one thread....... just gettin a little impatient...... hehehe

ok......reason why i ask that question was .....<remote access>>never mind.......so it hangs on shudown....winxp does take a long to shutdown 89 processes......with are running in the background....does alt+ctrl+del........task manager.....end tasks.......does it shutdown faster....

does this pc have the specs to run XP. I have an old pc that does the same. Windows 98 no problem. Windows 2000 or XP big problem, its slow as *censored* and finally grinds my PC to a halt. Whats your computer specs.

yea, it does have the right stuff to run xp. it hasn't really slowed down, its pretty much the same speed as when i had win. 98 on it. couldn't really tell you how old it is, cuz one of my friends bought it for me as a gift from a garage sale about a little over a year and a half ago.

i've never posted specs for a pc before, but here it goes:

amd-kg(tm) 3d processor

501 mhz

128mb of ram

i think the brand is memorex, cuz thats what it says on my disc tray. its probly real old.... i'll probly update its parts when i get some money. i exit out all my programs be4 i shut down. maybe to clear things up, when i get to the shutting down screen, it just turns blue and thats when it starts hanging. my system doesn't powerdown........ if u guys need more info, i'll be more than happy to give it to you.

Did you install this from fresh or over another windows OS, you may have to install windows again to see if it does the same thing, But before you do, i would look at power managment in xp and also the bios.

every one is asking the wrong questions.

1st) Did this problem start when your first installed XP?

2nd) Did you use a registry checker?

3rd) What version of XP do you have?

winxp is hungry for ram........buy another stick.......or more depending on mobo specs.......512/1024 ram......=winxp.......or go to majorgeeks.com and download freeramxp......it may help for the time being.....

more ram ::)

You should install more RAM. A minimum of 256MB RAM is recommended for Windows XP.

Updating your BIOS may help resolve your problem. However, only update your BIOS if your problem is known and the fix for it is included. Otherwise you are taking unnecessary risks.

The BIOS update? No. Only if the problem is known and the fix included.

I can not tell. It should shut down normally even with 128MB RAM.

Try this patch: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=307274

also be sure your power settings are not set to go into hibernation mode when indeed you want it to shutdown, that patch btw comes as part of SP1, so perhaps if you don't have that hotfix, it may be the ticket :)

Also know that certain older versions of Easy CD Creator cause the system to hang like that. Cheers!

updating your bios won't correct the problem.

Neither will buying RAM...

Its a software conflict. I was looking up info on this.

This is how you correct it. I'm sure it will work!!!

Download Service Pack 2
from the Microsoft website
Use your windows updates

if you dont know how here it is
