Title: How do I get a more up to date computer program?
Post by: deankelly on November 14, 2009, 12:47:03 PM
Hello guys and girls.

Can any one advise me what I can do.

I've been given my fathers old work laptop but its running windows 2000 professional which I've already come across problems with because its to old for a lot of the things I want to do with it.

Please can some one advise me as to where I can download a more up to date package if that's what you call it.

I'm not after the latest all singing all dancing one just something more up to date than this.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this.

Dean.

If you want a newer operating system you have to purchase a copy at a retail outlet.

Is there a My Computer icon on the desktop? If so, double-click on it. That will bring you to a screen that describes your computer. That's the easiest way - there are also programs I can have you download and install that will give you much more data.

Just cut and paste that screen here. And yes, that's probably the HD. Where did you get that number from?

Yes, but I'd like the speed of the processor and amount of installed ram. Download, install, and run Belarc Advisor (http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html) it will tell you everything we need.

Dell makes it easy.  Go to www.support.dell.com and enter your Service Tag number located on a label on the bottom of the laptop.

I don't see the data. Where did you post it? And I'll be logging off for the evening but there are others here who will be more than happy to help.

I am not sure about Allan's computer but double clicking on the "My Computer" icon doesn't display info about my computer. It just shows my hard drive, network drives, and other items hooked to my comp.

To get the info that Allan is requesting try right clicking on the "My Computer" icon and then click on "Properties" This should bring up a screen that will list  some of your computer details.

Sorry - you are correct. I'm on a Windows 7 system at the moment and forgot XP and prior versions don't work this way.
