I downloaded IE 8 and I hate it. It sucks, whenever I go to google and do a search, if I click on a link in the search results, it takes me to some other search engine page. I also can't ever get on Walmart.com, no matter what I do, if I click on a link somewhere or if I actually manually enter www.walmart.com, it opens a box on my screen about saving or opening a file. I tried to do a system restore, but that didn't work either, because I couldn't open internet explorer at all when I did that. I just want this stupid program off my computer, I want to go back to IE 7.

ADD / REMOVE if XP, Programs & Features if Vista or 7 - but IE8 isn't the problem.

Agree. Sounds more like malware and configuration issues. reverting to IE7 won't fix the problem, and switching to another browser merely obscures it.

I didn't have one of these problems before I downloaded IE 8. Can you elaborate on what it may be and how I might fix it?

Run a check with SuperAntiSpyware AND Malwarebytes

i agree it sucks, ive tried every cleaning program , evrey thing that promeses faster and better service and nothing works. i want ie7 back. does anyone have any other suggestions

Try Mozilla Firefox. When it asks if you want to make it your default browser, check yes. I agree all versions of IE are a POS, and I seldon use it.

I like the features, the tool bar, the fact that if you get kicked offline it'll take you back to where you were instead of having to start all over, but I just don't like that I can't get to my search results when I search for something on google. And I ran my programs, Malwarebytes and Super Antispyware, and they did pretty much what they always do: waste a ton of time and help with nothing.

IE is not your best choice - get FireFox (or Opera or try the new Google browser, Chrome, which I've found to be the fastest of all of them).

Try posting in the Computer Viruses and Spyware section and have an EXPERT look at your logs. Search engine redirection is basically a guarenteed way of knowing you're infected.

You're using XP right?
Do this: Click Start -->Control Panel -->Add/Remove Programs. Find IE8 in the list and remove it. Restart your computer. It will automatically roll back to IE7.

It's a law of computing: the moment some otherwise intelligent people sit down in front of a computer, their brain turns to mush. I once had to try to explain to somebody what a left-click was, since they insisted on right-clicking everything.
I ended up describing a left-click as a wrong-click. somehow wrong and right are opposites but not right and left.
Or:
"Ok, not left click the icon"
"Left... that's the opposite of right, isn't it?"

Yes, in my opinion. I have to say that this forum is moderated by genuinely arrogant "geniuses" who would rather talk about their intelligence than actually try to help people. mcummings36, I would suggest you try PC Help Forum http://www.pchelpforum.com/ (http://www.pchelpforum.com/), where you would get some help with your problem and not all the arrogant rantings that appear here.

In my opinion that would be petty. He expressed his view, he posted his suggested alternative, and leaving it up shows a this site has some class - again, in my opinion. If this were tweaks I'd leave it up and quietly pat myself on the back for doing so ;)

I see references made to snide comments... how is stating a opinion as such a snide comment? (No really, while I can see an Implication being drawn regarding the off-topic conversation as applying to the OP, mine, at least, were merely an observation; the people I discussed where otherwise smart people- friends even; I was merely making an observation about curious things that occured with them while they used a computer; something I personally attribute to being way to careful to not press the wrong button; a good quality to some extent, but not in the extent I witnessed! :).
regarding any other forum being "better", well, that's just silly, and; as was said, an opinion; perhaps even a biased one. Now, certainly, they do the very same thing that is done here; but really? I doubt it's much different. Only one forum that I am a member of (Although, the total is only a handful) had issues that could be traced back to moderation (from what I could tell,TDWTF forums had a few issues a few years back... but I wasn't a member then by any means); and while there certainly have been stints here between specific members there certainly has never been any purposed ill-will towards visitors, at least that I've seen; unless of course they are spammers or known trolls; this is unlikely to be much different from any other forum.
Either way... I also recommend Firefox, or any other browser (except chrome), myself. However, switching the browser would only be the first step; they would still need to revert to IE7, something I had to do on my Vista machine. (my lyrics plugin for WinAmp displayed "page not displayed", and loads of issues with Compiled HTML files, which I use heavily; this is despite my main browser being Firefox. reverting to IE7 solved these issues.
Now, that being said, the original issue appeared to have been link redirection; as far as I am aware, upgrading to IE8 from IE7 wouldn't be enough to cause this sort of issue; and the download request by the browser indicates an unrecognized file type, something that might occur if a URL is redirected via the hosts file to another IP (possibly a trojan downloader IP) that automatically tries to send a malicious package.
Now, as stated before, these issues can be circumvented by using Firefox, but that's just tiptoeing around the problem; there is still an infection. While I must second the advice to use Firefox as a main browser myself, I must also reiterate that the original issue doesn't appear to be wholly caused merely by IE.

Not sure how it is on your side of the pond, but our economy is already ruined. I would actually like to see a major drop in people using the internet and computers in general.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally don't see much reason in doing so. We're not in competition with other sites, nor does the forum make any sort of profit. And to be perfectly honest, I'd be just fine if about half of our members would move on to another site. But I just don't like people much. That's why I'm a moderator.
As a matter of fact that is where I go when I need help and not want any snide remarks.
And you come here to argue? If you dislike it here so much, we'd be happy to fix that for you.

Close all programs.
Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
Click Add or Remove Programs.
In the list of currently installed programs, click Windows Internet Explorer 8, and then click Remove.
Note If Windows Internet Explorer 8 does not appear in the list of installed updates, try the alternative steps for Windows XP or for Windows Server 2003.
Follow the instructions to uninstall Internet Explorer 8.
When the uninstall program is finished, restart your computer.
