Title: USB 1.1 help..
Post by: BabyHaylie06 on January 04, 2010, 11:55:29 AM
I was wondering if anyone can help me.  A friends computer is about 10 years old and they have Windows XP running on it.  I bought my friend a webcam for christmas but it won't work on their computer.  After some research we found out that their usb drive is a 1.1 and the webcam needs it to be a 2.0 in order to work.  I bought a 2.0 usb extender hoping that it would make the webcam work but it doesn't.  It says that because the original usb drive is a 1.1 then it will convert the extender to a 1.1 even though its a 2.0

So my question is this.  How do we make the usb into a 2.0 so that the webcam can work?  We already did the usb search and we found out that its not 2.0 compatible so we can't just go and buy a new disk thing to install.  Is there another way of getting the computer to have a 2.0 usb drive so that we can get the webcam to work?

Thanks in advance for any help!  :-)

I don't know what a USB 2.0 extender is, but you probably want a USB 2.0 PCI card, like this:

Is the Computer Windows 98, ME, 2k, or XP?

This is the extender that I was talking about.  Not sure of the actual name of it.  lol

The computer has Windows XP running on it.

That won't help, it's only a USB hub.  WinXP won't require any special drivers for the USB 2.0 card.

So is there a way of getting a usb drive on the computer without having to open up the computer and putting in a new card?

thanks!

so if i buy a card then it should work in the computer, right?

What if the computer doesn't say anything about being usb2 compatible?  Or are all computers compatible as long as I insert the correct card?
