Title: Accidentally Deleted userinit.exe cant login
Post by: tabbylove17 on January 11, 2010, 06:50:52 PM
hi i was doing a scan using spybot for my brothers computer and i deleted all the harmful things it found so when i restarted the computer it wouldn't let me login...it kept going from the welcome screen to the desktop screen then back to the welcome screen saying it was loading personal settings. It just keeps repeating this sequence over and over. I tried going into the recovery console so i can restore userinit.exe but its asking for admin. password and no one knows it. Is their a way around the password? or is their another way to restore the userinit.exe?

You're stuck, because, you can disable recovery console password only from within Windows and userinit can be replaced only through recovery console.
You may try Windows repair: http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/How-to-repair-Windows-XP-t138.html

im not sure if its the userinit.exe that got deleted but when i was reading about other peoples computer issues they were similar to mine thats why i think it might be the issue. i was trying a few different things people were suggesting but i couldnt figure out how to burn an image to a cd disk properly so im stuck at that step i was at. not sure what else to do.

You will have to create a small 'fix CD' to solve this problem.
Please download RC.ISO and save it somewhere you can find it.
Also download MagicISO and install it.

Start MagicISO. You should see a window informing you about the full version of MagicISO.
In the bottom right select Try It! and the program will open.
Click on File and then on Open and navigate to the RC.ISO file you downloaded. Select it, and click Open.

First, you'll need to add a clean version of userinit.exe to the current RC.ISO•In the upper right pane, double click on the i386 folder.
•Right click in the upper right pane and select Add Files...•Navigate to C:\Windows\System32 and select userinit.exe•Then click Open to add userinit.exe to the CD image.
•Click File and select Save As...•Name the file RCplus and save it somewhere you can find it.
Next, we'll need to burn the newly created image to a disk that we can use to fix the problem.
•Put a blank CD-R disk in your CD burner and close the tray. If an AutoPlay window opens, close it.
•Click on Tools and select Burn CD/DVD with ISO.... A window will appear.
•Click on the little folder to the right of CD/DVD Image File then navigate to the newly created RCplus.iso Image file and click Open.
•In the CD/DVD Writing Speed drop-down menu choose the 8X setting.
•Under Format make sure that Mode 1 is selected.
•And finally, click on the Burn it! button to burn RCplus.iso to disk.
Once the disk is burned, put it in the machine you want to fix and restart it.
Boot to the CD just as you would with a Windows XP disk.
At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to enter the Recovery Console.
Choose the installation to be repaired by number (usually 1) and press Enter.
When you are asked for the Administrator password, enter the password or leave it blank (default) and press Enter.

At the C:\Windows> prompt, type the following commands pressing Enter after each one. Note: Watch the spaces.

D:
cd i386
copy userinit.exe c:\windows\system32
exit

After putting in the third command, you should receive the message 1 file copied which will indicate that the operation succeeded.
Now take out the CD and reboot your computer to normal mode. Try to log in and it should let you back in.

He can't access recovery console, to start with.
Then, he's not even sure, if userinit is missing.

Do you guys have a system rescue disk with a WINPE? Boot into WINPE, copy a userinit.exe from another same system to yours and paste it to your system folder. This works much the same way like the DOS floppy disk, but more powerful and simpler. ;)
You may refer to this official article about how to make a WINPE start-up disc.

I have a reinstallaion CD for Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Service Pack 2, sent to me by Dell..The laptop is a Gateway...Will this work?
Title: Re: Accidentally Deleted userinit.exe cant login

Unfortunately not. That's only for reinstalling Windows. If you do this all your private data and installed (by you) programs will be gone.
You need regular Windows CD to perform repair.

And the version installed and Service Packs need to match the CD borrowed...

I was waiting for you to say that  ;D

Adding to patio's comment...that would be the best, but, if you can get ANY Windows XP CD, we can work it out, by slipstreaming needed service pack into it.

#1 yes.
I can't guarantee you, it'll work, but it's a good starting point and everyone should have Windows CD.
Make sure, your XP version is the same (Home, or Pro).

Oooops, sorry for that...I forgot your issue.
I can't tell you what Windows version you have, then.
If the sticker says Windows 2000 Pro, it may be, but I can't assure you, because someone might have install something else.
You said, you have some recovery CD?
What is the exact name of that CD?

Also i just bought a gateway laptop a few days ago, but it didnt come with any cds(restore or windows 7) but in the quickstart and troubleshooting guide it says something about creating recovery disks would i be able to use any of these since the laptop that we're trying to fix is a gateway?
Title: Re: Accidentally Deleted userinit.exe cant login
Post by: Broni on January 13, 2010, 01:12:39 PM
OK, let's make this more clear. You have:
1. Dell desktop with reinstallation CD (this CD will work only on this very particular machine).
2. Gateway laptop in question, not bootable at this moment, no CD, we're not even sure about Windows version installed.
3. Just bought another Gateway laptop.
Is this correct?

YES for #1 and #3....as for #2 the laptop in question was fixed once before and was installed with windows XP. Just found this info out.

Title: Re: Accidentally Deleted userinit.exe cant login

It looks like the laptop came with Windows 2000 originally installed, so it must be pretty old. I doubt, it has any recovery partition.
I think, you only two options at this moment.
1. Borrow Windows XP CD and try repair installation.
2. Buy Windows XP CD and go for a clean install, but...considering laptop's age, it may not be worth to do it.
