I should much appreciate your help on this strange new problem which is twofold:
1. Clicking either color item (for text or for cell) brings no change in designated cell(s)
2. When colors appear on Print Preview they do not on the Printout.
It occurs on both HP desktop XP SP3 & Dell Vista Ultimate SP2. Am on IE8; Ctrl Panel list also shows !E7.
I am unable to use either COLOR icons -- for text or for cells. No trouble heretofore which makes it so frustrating.
Ordinarily, following usual usage, all is well. For unknown reasons, now neither has any effect.
Explored for cause/cure without finding anything more than instructions already well known.
Did see note saying High Contrast might make colors ineffective, so searched out that. Found how to turn on/off, and easily turned off High Contrast. Made no difference.
So out of ideas at this juncture. What am I doing wrong or failing to do?

To soybean and and other forum members who may be interested in what was an intractable problem, here's cause/cure:
I don't know if I'm more concerned with the cost ($65) of resolution or its simplicity (required two minutes), but I'm back to normal.
FYI, shifting THEME back to Windows Classic (or few other choices) restored COLOR icons to full function.
As for gridlines, clicking ZOOM at Print Preview restored them in all columns. As is well said, "Live & learn"!

$65 for two minutes, OUCH! Thanks for posting the outcome and solution you found. But, frankly, this still doesn't make much sense. Are you saying you can not use the standard Windows XP theme on your Windows XP computer and the standard Vista theme on your Vista system? That just doesn't sound right. I have Office 2007 installed on a laptop running Vista Home Premium with the standard desktop theme and have had no issues with Excel.

I'm glad your problem is solved, although it cost you a few bucks. $65 for two minutes equals $1860 an hour (I want that job).
I'm confused about this also. I've spent a lot of time in Excel, played with a few different themes, but don't understand how one would affect the other.
Can you tell us more of what cured the problem, or what they said?

I'm far from an expert in Excel...but this just doesn't make sense.

I'll do my best to cover each of your queries.
Patio, as you know, you don't get the tech pros at home without a minimum. Even so, the problem is there are lots of MSN pros, but their expertise often is an area not the needed one. So qualifications become even more important, starting with assurance the tech has passed MSN testing.
This eliminates automatic choice of the least expensive.
Of course one doesn't go this route until having researched and tried System Restore and checked with various forums; in this case including Excel forum; MSN Ask forum; this one, which I regard highly; and several others.
For various reasons one must also forego the usual easy workaround "solution", uninstall/reinstall, which tells you nothing as to cause -- and possible repetition of problem.
You can be sure there were enough side issues to keep my guy busy a full hour!
Soybean, the "cockpit trouble" allusion meant the fault was mine, not the program (although I do maintain MSN should have had more to say about THEME and its use/dangers!). I must have changed the theme on the laptop without slightest reason of collateral consequences. I don't even recall doing it, but I do know I was looking to change the overal screen appearance/color. Ignorance is NOT bliss!
Point is you must use one of the MSN choices, such as Windows classic, to avoid worksheet functions being unresponsive. As you say, using any standard MSN theme you have no issues.
It has nothing to do with XP vs Vista, or even the differences between Office2007 Standard and Office2007 Commercial Pro. Obviously I hadn't changed the XP Excel so it worked as usual; messing with Excel on Vista explains why the spreadsheet used to function normally, but did not subsequently. When problems appear one naturally looks at obvious reasons such as these differences. How in the world would I have any idea it concerned Themes? You won't find that in any FAQs, nor in forum replies concerned with which version of a product in use, ETC.

Windows comes from Microsoft. What does MSN (http://www.msn.com/) have to do with this?
How in the world would I have any idea it concerned Themes?
Where did you get your themes? My Vista laptop only has Windows Vista and Windows Classic. Changing it back and forth had no effect on Excel 2007. Did you download Themes from a source such as http://www.guimods.com/category/windows-vista-themes/?

Soybean, please excuse my carelessness.
1. I edited original posting in another forum, and thought had done so here. It was and is OK on desktop.
2. Use MSN as abbreviation for Microsoft. Demonstrates my inexperience and will avoid in future. Think in terms of "Alice-in-Wonderland", when I use a word it means just what I intend it to -- or words to that effect.
3. Wish I knew. As said, no recall of having changed it in the first place. Speaking defensively, and not as an excuse, I know nothing about Themes and it would not occur to me to go to it in this connection. Also, there is no reference to it I found at HELP or anywhere else when trying to find why worksheet functions were unresponsive.
4. Keep in mind not everyone has your knowledge and tech-savvy. And it's interesting to me that neither you, nor any of many other forum members here and elsewhere, including EXCEL forum & Microsoft Ask forum, had any idea of Themes as a reason for lack of worksheet functions. Nor of ZOOM to get gridlines.
