Title: Dell Inspiron 6000 Laptop will not access the internet
Post by: Fordtruckmaniac on January 21, 2010, 09:43:39 PM
A friend brought by a Dell Inspiron 6000 laptop with Windows Media Center in it. The complaint is, it will not access the internet.

I have have checked and reset all settings I can think of.

I have tried with my wirless router, hard wired it with an ethernet cable, no go.

I have cleaned it up, ran Windows disk cleanup,  C-Cleaner, Avast, Malwarebytes, in safe mode, found nothing ugly. I have disabled and re-enabled the built in wi-fi card same with the LAN card. It will not connect.  ??? ??? ???

What am I missing here?

Maybe it's so obvious that you didn't mention it, but I don't see on your list:

My Network Places -> View Network Connections -> Local Area Connection/Internet Connection -> Repair This Connection

My computer was sick for awhile and I had to do this on every boot up until I got the system straightened out.

Yes I have done that several times.

Right now on the "Wireless Network Connection Status" box, I show "Limited or no Connectivity"  and yet and "signal strenght" is excellent.   ???

Can you ping without connecting online?

You didn't say it wouldn't go online - you said it couldn't access the internet. Not the same thing, hence the question.

With all due respect, I made it very clear in my first posting that I couldn't get online.

You know, my goal isn't to argue with you - honest. But I've reread your first post half a dozen times and nowhere does it say you can't get online, only that you are unable to access the internet. But okay, now I know.

Perhaps some additional explanation of this point would clear up the confusion. For many users, not being able to access the internet is synonymous with not being able to get online.  I'm sure this distinction you're making is the reason for asking,
Can he ping?
I'll post this reference, which may help: Using Ping to Troubleshoot Network Problem (http://www.home-network-help.com/troubleshoot-network.html)

Sorry, it one of those deals, it sounded right to me for an explanation.

Any way, I do have my own computers hooked to the same router, and my equipment is fine.

The not connecting, is the complaint the person that owns this laptop had. They have a anther desktop unit hooked up on their router and its fine. This issue just up and appeared last week some time.

I am just tryng to help them out.

Any errors in device manager?

Have you tried doing a system restore to before the problem started?

The answer to Allan's question is still unclear.

1. Click Start>Run (Start>"Start search" in Vista).

2. Type in (or copy and paste):

          cmd /c ping google.com>%temp%\$.$&notepad %temp%\$.$

      and press Enter.

3. Notepad will open.

4. Copy all text in Notepad ([Ctrl-A], then [Ctrl-C]), and then post it (paste = [Ctrl-V]) in your next reply.

Soy, nice answer.  I'm not sure it sunk in to the OP but you gave him everything he needs to get started troubleshooting.  You have got to eliminate one issue at a time and then move on.

No errors in the device manager, went there right at the start, and it says device is working fine.

Yes, tried the system restore also.

It says,  "Ping request could not find host google.com. Please check the name and try again"

Try any steps listed below, which you haven't tried yet...

Turn off computer. Disconnect router, and modem from power source for 30 seconds.
Power them back on.
Restart computer.

If that doesn't work, bypass router, and connect computer straight to the modem.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

In Command Prompt window, type in following commands, and hit Enter after each one:
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Go Start>Run (Start search in Vista), type in:
cmd
Click OK (in Vista, while holding CTRL, and SHIFT, press Enter).

At Command Prompt, type in:
netsh int ip reset reset.log
Hit Enter.
Type in:
netsh winsock reset catalog
Hit Enter.

Restart computer.

If that doesn't work...
Download, install, and run WinSockFix: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Tweak/Network-Tweak/WinSockFix.shtml (doesn't work in Vista)
Restart computer, and check again.

If that doesn't work...
Download Dial-A-Fix (DAF) (doesn't work in Vista):
http://wiki.lunarsoft.net/wiki/Dial-a-fix#Mirrors.2Fdownload_locations.2C_and_articles

Have XP CD available in case DAF needs a file. Likely not!

Check all boxes on the screen (clear any restrictions if it shows any)
Then click GO!

When the entire page is finished click the HammerHead at bottom to go to the second DAF page.

Here, one at a time, do the below:

Reinstall BITS
Reinstall Windows Firewall
Repair Permissions
Reset networking

Watch for any File not found or other errors and make note as this may lead to the fix!

Restart computer.

I wish I knew what happened, but I don't.

After turning on the laptop to perform Broni's suggestions , the laptops wi-fi card just started working again. It will connect to the internet now, wi-fi and hardwired to the LAN card. I quickly installed the updated drivers from Dell, for the wi-fi and LAN card. Updated the BIOS too.

It is still working tonight. I wish I had something intelligent to say, but I don't.

Anyway its working now. Thanks to all for the help.
