Title: device manager shows question marks galore. no sound. screenshots.
Post by: ejames82 on February 01, 2010, 07:43:26 AM
hi,

i reinstalled xp professional.  my computer is a compaq presario SR1710NX and found i have no sound.  device manager shows a slew of yellow question marks (exclamation points) that indicate the problem.  there is a screenshot that illustrates this.
i have installed everest (i hope i have the right version) and i have a screenshot of the output of the motherboard chipset.  is this what was needed?
i know i need to learn more about drivers and the proper installation of them, and i am working on this (i've been on google).  in the meantime, i just want to be sure that i get the proper drivers installed and get this computer working right.
the last time i came here asking for help a fine gentleman provided me with a link, and all i had to do was click on the link.  everything else was done inside the computer.  i couldn't believe there was no setup, installation, file extensions, nothing!  incredibly easy.
i know there is a procedure that takes place between the question marks in device manager, the running of everest, and the link that gets clicked on, any advice, tutorials, links, etc, that could be shared with me would be most appreciated.
thanks.

Have you installed the chipset driver? If not, download and install it. Then install your other drivers.

Allan,

i just visited the hp site and was pleasantly surprised that they had so much for this computer.  i'll see if i can't install the chipset drivers as you advise.
my experiences with hp in the past have left alot to be desired.  maybe this will be pleasant.
i've bought several new computers from them.

thanks for the quick reply.  i'll be right back.

You're welcome - and take you're time. There's almost always someone here to help.

i screwed up.  i went and installed the realtek audio driver.  though it worked (i have sound), i think it messed up the pending installation of the chipset drivers.  here is a screenshot that shows this.
i am going to wait for your reply (or someone else with expertise, i clearly don't :P).  if i need to uninstall the audio driver, i can do that.  sorry.
thanks for the help.

You don't need to uninstall anything. Just install the chipset driver.

that's the point.  i tried to install it and it wouldn't install.  the screenshot was taken because of this.
i negotiated to c>softpaq>sp26608 and tried to run the exe and received the same error message.  i don't know what to do in device manager.  i don't see chipset for motherboard listed there.  i'll go back and look again.
even though this isn't working.  i still find it quite fascinating.
what do i do?
thanks.  i won't mess anything else up.

What service pack is your XP version?
And you tried to run WHICH .exe (the name of the file)? Did you try the install.exe in the folder that is created (\softpaq\sp26608 )

Go to c>softpaq>sp26608 then to the chipset_ATI_SMBus folder. Right-click on SMBUSati.inf and select "install". If that doesn't work we'll point device manager to that driver.

It's also possible that the driver you are trying to install from softpaq may be corrupted...
DLoad and install a fresh one for your machine from the site...
Save it to the Desktop and run the install.

No, I just downloaded the driver and got the same message. There are a couple of .exe files there though and I want to know what he's trying.

OK gotcha...so the DLoad is corrupt ?

I don't think so. It may want to install via the .inf file. But there is an install.exe in the parent folder and I'd like to know if the OP tried that

Is it possible the .inf needs to be migrated to the registry 1st and then run the .exe ? ?

it's servicepack 3.
sp26608.

i gave this a shot:

Go to c>softpaq>sp26608 then to the chipset_ATI_SMBus folder. Right-click on SMBUSati.inf and select "install".
it didn't work.  i put up task manager and said it was running.  but after a few minutes, nothing happened.

i can try to get you a screenshot of this, but i am not quick enough.  i'll wait and see what you say next.

thanks to both of you.

Okay. In device manager double-click on the smbus controller. Click on the Driver Tab - Update Driver Button - Do NOT connect to the web - Install from a specific location - and point it to the SMBUSati.inf file then click OK

Do you have a modem? I'm guessing yes because of the yellow error next to PCI communications device. Yes, everest may help - but just look at the back of your computer - is there a place for a telephone plug? How do you get online?

yep.  i used to have dial-up (with a different computer, but that is the type of jack that the phone plugs into).  it's a pci card that plugs into the mb.

the writing on it says coxenant systems.

Then download and install the graphics and modem drivers, reboot, and you should be all set. If either or both create folders on your drive you can delete those folders after the drivers are successfully installed and you reboot.

If you no longer use that modem...pull the card and store it.

"If you no longer use that modem...pull the card and store it."

why?, patio.  is it draining resources from my computer?  would this show in task manager?
i'll do it anyway, but you know how some people just gotta ask questions. :)

thanks.

To tell the truth, I have the same question. I have "unused" modems in a lot of my computers that have ethernet cards.
