Why do you use the hibernate function? I guess I can see the benefit for some people on laptops, but never on desktops. It's a buggy feature at best. Instead, just set the hd and display to power down after a defined period of inactivity. Both you and your computer will be much happier.

Please - talk in full sentences. Are you saying you tried to change the options in Control Panel - Power Options and the same thing happens? Please don't make us drag the information out of you.

Go into the bios and look for a setting that says: Wake on LAN. If it's enabled, disable it.

Also - what is the OS?

Win 7. How do I enter Bios?
Title: Re: Turning on after hibernate. need help.
Post by: Allan on February 22, 2010, 10:55:37 AM
Reboot. When the system first boots watch for a message that says something like: To enter setup (or bios) press....

For emachines it should be either the DELETE key or the F2 key I believe, but what ever key it says, that's the key to press. Once in bios be careful not to change ANYTHING except for the Wake on Lan setting, and then only if it is on (you want it off). After you make the change, click on SAVE CHANGES AND EXIT

The OS has nothing to do with getting into the bios.

The only other thing I know that causes the same problem is related to XP Media Center (wanting to update TV Guide at certain times).

Try disconnecting the network cable from the PC (modem or NIC) and then see if the computer turns itself on. Either way, we'll have more information to work with.

I'm on a wireless network, and it's always off at night, no exceptions.

Any chance you're picking up a neighbor's network at those specific times?

Otherwise we have to go back to patio's original thought - something in scheduled tasks or an app that is doing something on its own at scheduled times.

One other possibility, of course, is malware. No harm in scanning with both your AV and MalwareBytes (both please).

I have no neighbors that use wireless, and I only have one neighbor! I have no scheduled tasks, I have checked that today. How do i scan my AV and MalwareBytes?

Oh, by the way, i turned of remote desktop, and am running kaspersky.

Do a full system scan with Kaspersky AV. Then download MalwareBytes and do a full system scan with that.

Well, then I'm at a loss. Are there any other "Wake On" entries in your bios?

Re-enable both of these...
Yeah, sorry - I wasn't suggesting you disable anything else - just wanted to know if your bios had anything unusual for "wake on"

It HAS to be something in bios.

What? It's quite annoying.
Title: Re: Turning on after hibernate. need help.
Post by: HELPHELP on February 24, 2010, 10:17:46 AM
AH! I could just turn it off, then unplug it! does that hurt computers?
Title: Re: Turning on after hibernate. need help.
Post by: Allan on February 24, 2010, 10:21:56 AM
Nope. That's always an option. But as you say, don't pull the plug until the system is indeed OFF. One other option - use a power strip (as I do on all systems).

Post by: HELPHELP on February 24, 2010, 10:28:19 AM
I have a power strip/serge protector, but it controls stuff I can't turn off.
Title: Re: Turning on after hibernate. need help.
Post by: Allan on February 24, 2010, 10:36:27 AM
You could always get another power strip. Doesn't have to be an expensive one.

Unplugging is much easier. ;D
