For the month of March we thought it would be interesting to see what type of display setup you're using on your computer. Feel free to talk more about your display setup or if you think you've got a unique monitor setup or want to show off feel free to post pictures of your setup.

I'm using a 21 inch Dell CRT. I got an Acer 15.6 inch widescreen monitor for Christmas but it's too small. I hooked it up for one day and then put it back in the box. I have several older CRT monitors. Ten of them work.

I've got a 19" CRT that has outlived a couple of computers. As much as I would like to get a larger HD flat screen, I just can't seem to justify the cost while this one is working fine. The day this thing breaks, hello flat screen.

Desktop: 19" 1440x900 LCD
laptop(Toshiba L300): 15.4" 1280x800
older laptops- 800x600(passive matrix (=washed out) and 640x480(active matrix)

Laptop: use its built-in screen, of course, but also have an 18.5" LCD widescreen monitor (1366 x 768) attached to it for dual display.
Primary desktop: dual monitors - a 17" CRT (1024x768) and a 19" non-widescreen LCD (1280x1024).
Secondary desktop: 19" LCD (1680x1050)

Other than the DVD and floppy drives, my 15" LCD monitor is all that remains of the original Compaq computer I bought in 2001. This monitor is still chugging along and though I am always keeping an eye out for a good deal on a replacement I never actually buy one because when it gets right down to it, the old monitor works fine.

:P two CRT monitors
I was using a nice gateway 19" LCD, but it quit on me.. I think it was the inverter light.. I took it down to the electronics recycling center.. R.I.P. :(

Two 19-inch 1440x900 LCD monitors.
One monitor is connected to my HP Mini (so I don't have to look at the tiny screen) and the other is a dual-monitor setup with my 16-inch Lenovo laptop.

I am always keeping an eye out for a good deal on a replacement I never actually buy one because when it gets right down to it, the old monitor works fine.
The 19" non-widescreen LCD (1280x1024) I mentioned was free. It was turned in to a recycling event conducted by a computer user's group to which I belong. At that time, it did not work. One of the group members repaired it and I became the new owner. I've had it for 6 months or so and it has worked fine.
Prior to getting that monitor, I was using two 17" CRT monitors on my Primary desktop system. As stated in my previous post, I now have one of those 17" CRTs and the 19" non-widescreen LCD attached to it. I still have the de-commissioned 17"CRT; I'll probably hang on to it for quite awhile as a spare in case it's needed.
The 18.5" LCD widescreen monitor (1366 x 768) I mentioned in my previous post is a ASUS VH192D I got from newegg.com. They were running a special sale price on it at the time and a $30 mail-in rebate was also in effect then. The net cost was a very low $70. :)

First of all i must say that i am glad to be here, this is my first post here. I found this site really cool and i think that a great job was done here.
My first three monitors were CRT , all of them broken :).
Now i have an insipirion notebook , much better :)....
Any way romantic times..... with those first CRT's .

I'm using IDK. Most everything I own is IDK. Life is just too complicated. :(
My Toshiba Satellite is about 6 years old. All I can say is, if I had my life to live over again I would have gotten a wide screen. If I had my life to live over again I would have been born rich and gotten a lighter weight wide screen laptop, which I would by now have traded for an even lighter weight wide screen laptop.
I am confused by multiple panels. I want them, but I have no idea how they are used. How do you send different information to different screens? I can't even cope with split screens on what I do have - I don't intentionally split the screen, it's something that happens accidentally and then I go nuts trying to remember how to unsplit it.
Anyone know of a nice simple article or website that describes the use of split screens, especially how they are used in scientific arenas?

Iiyama ProLite E2208HDS Full HD 22in LCD. It's amazing. I'd like to buy another as my graphics card can support it and it would have it's uses in video editing, but I can't afford it.

I'm with Thompson. I sooooooo hate to replace something that still works. It seems like such a waste of money. But I junked the crt in favor of a 22inch LCD. Now I'm very happy that I did. So happy, that for my birthday this year I have decided to get the largest LCD monitor I can find. So far that has been a 28inch at Tiger Direct. Does anyone know of a larger flat screen monitor?

Why would I have to be 6 in order to live my life over again? If I could go back in time, 6 years, I would have chosen a wide screen laptop.
A split screen is a way to look at different parts of a document at the same time. Each view can be scrolled separately, except when they're syncronized. I guess. I don't intentionally split the screen, I accidentally do it and then have to figure out how to make it stop. (I finally learned how.)

you said your laptop was 6 years old, and if you could live your life over again, you'd get a bigger screen. therefore implying your "life" was 6 years long. :P

that's application specific, though, and really just changes the view of the document- properly, it's called splitting the window, not really the screen. A "Split screen" implies showing two desktops simultaneously on a single screen by splitting the physical screen in half and showing one on each half.

You bet, if you have two monitors you can do all sorts of neat stuff you couldn't do otherwise, like watch DVDs or videos on one monitor and keep working in another.

I'm pretty sure they exist. Or did you mean, you don't believe in using dual monitors? In which case the question is... why?

Internet computer: one 24" LCD widescreen
laptop: 15" widescreen
netbook: 10" widescreen
system monitoring computer: eight 19" LCD although I'm going to replace the eight with two 30" widescreens with ultra high resolution

Actually, if I had a 24" monitor, I think I might no longer see much need for dual monitors. I've never used a monitor that large but I would think that size screen has enough space to have two windows open side-by-side and achieve somewhat the same advantage as two smaller monitors, especially if those two monitors are 17".

I somewhat agree..... I've got one 24" monitor on my Internet computer, and it's plenty. I usually only have Firefox and Outlook open with a couple instances of explorer open in the background in case I need them. Firefox and Outlook are side by side with a little overlap. On the other hand, with my development computer, I would hate to have to get by with only one monitor. Sometimes I do wish I had two 24" monitors instead of the two 22" monitors I have, to give me a higher resolution and more real estate.

Those are incredibly low resolutions, aren't they? At least for a 19" I would get minimum 1280x1048 (or something), like I have. People nowadays have 3448x2978 res'.. it's nuts, but it's very good for programming. I can't imagine programming on a 640x480. The scrollwork would be nuts..

I had to work in 640x480x4bpp (16 colors) on my 486 with 24MB of RAM... and this was running windows 98 and Visual Studio 6. It worked OK, I suppose. When I got my K6-2 (and after a while, finally did my first ever install of windows 95 or higher) it automatically detected the ATI rage pro that was in the machine and installed the drivers (this was really a pleasant surprise) and I was able to use 1024x768, which I considered mega-high resolution at the time. (I still consider it rather high, certainly workable, depending on the program). The monitors I was using were crap though. most of them couldn't even go higher then 1024x768 anyway. This LCD was the first monitor I got that was capable of anything higher (well, without threatening to explode or giving out a constant,loud tortured scream).
Also, the LCD was a gift a few Christmases ago... (or maybe a birthday present, can't remember), and considering the tech skills of the gifter it was a really good choice.
I haven't had any issues with screen real-estate in any of my development; scripting in editpadpro, VB6 and Visual Studio 2008 get along with the size just fine.
Also: at least one thing can be said for smaller resolutions & programming- it makes you write shorter code or break things up into procedures, which is a good thing in the long run; certainly not something to use low resolutions for on purpose, though.

Hi. I was satisfied with my 17" LG CRT Flat Screen until I had occasion to work on a neighbors system which includes a 22" ACER LCD. I had lots of work on that PC so I was going there off and on for quite a while. After using that monitor it didn't take long until I was looking for something similar. I ended up purchasing a 22" Samsung LCD. Nice monitor, just love it. Also, it's easier on the eyes(they ain't what they used to be), plus the added space on my desktop is a real bonus too.
The old dependable LG will go in my storage shed where I have an old DELL PC set up that I use to send music to my work shop/garage. (Too much sawdust etc. in the work shop for the system so I pump the music over).
Anyway,as an added note, here's the only problem that my Samsung created: I like my LCD monitor so much that I became unsatisfied with my 27" Hitachi CRT TV, so I went and purchased a 47" LG LCD TV.
I guess the moral of this(if there is one?) is, if you're satisfied using a CRT monitor, stick with it as long as you can. It just may save you a lot of cash. ;) ;)

I'm using a Samsung PN50A550 50" plasma. It's driven by an EVGA 9800GTXSSC Special Edition video card. The connection is DVI to HDMI. Rez in 1920x1080 @60Hz. It's awesome for games and movies!

Well, you can make a really trippy slideshow in powerpoint, put that on the ceiling and that will be cool.
