Allrighty!
So I've got this Compaq Deskpro EN Series desktop. It was purchased from eBay a long time ago and it's a project machine for old school DOS gaming. Don't judge!!
Anyway, I'm working with Windows 98 SE. Everything ELSE has always worked correctly with this computer EXCEPT adding upgraded sound. I'm trying to install my Creative AWE64 (ISA slot, I believe?) and have always run into problems.
As follows.
When installing the AWE64 it does NOT disable the onboard ESS1869 and will conflict, resulting in NEITHER working correctly.
My attempt at a solution was to disable the onboard ESS with my CMOS (accessed from F10 at startup) and while it is reading as disabled, and settings are saving correctly, it DOES NOT disable the ESS in the Windows environment.
All right, so I tried disabling the ESS and it's controller from the device manager in Windows. This TEMPORARILY worked, and then it basically reset itself and began conflicting again, disabling the AWE64.
So, I have a simple question. How does one DISABLE the onboard sound? Theorhetically, if the ESS1869 is no longer even picked up, it shouldn't conflict with the AWE64. It's worth noting the AWE64 itself is NOT the problem and is in working order. It's been in three seperate machines without issues.

I had an older PC with an ESS sound chipset; there was a jumper on the motherboard to disable/enable it.
