Title: Post won't finish loading?
Post by: Heinstar on March 27, 2010, 10:54:28 PM
Okay well long story short because my PC wasn't working I thought it was my GPU that was the problem. To test this out I inserted my GPU into my brothers mob. And it turns out that I was right because it showed white lines across the screen in Post of my brothers PC with a message 'Memory information: DDR3 1333 Unganged Mode' without loading anything else. So I switch both GPU back in it's original place. After I found out that my GPU is faulty I encountered a new problem:

My brother's PC still displays the message 'Memory information: DDR3 1333 Unganged Mode' after booting his PC it won't finish loading the Post. And it should be displaying 'Memory runs at Dual Channel Interleaved' instead. It's also not displaying any white lines which is logical since that only happens with my GPU. Unfortunately because the Post won't load I can't open the DVD player and I can't enter any of the BIOS settings.
So What should I do?

Here's my spec:
CPU: Intel E6600
GPU: NVIDIA 8800GTS
Mobo: GIGABYTE 965P-DS3P(rev. 3.3)
RAM: Transcend 1GB, DDR2-800 x2
OS: Windows XP home edition 32 bit
PSU:500w Antec Earth Watts Power Supply

Here's my bro's spec:
CPU: AMD phenom II 720 TripleCore
GPU: Zotac  GTX260*2(216SP) 896M DDR3
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD770/SB700 chipset/DDR3 1600
RAM: G.Skill 2GB DDR3 1333  PC106666 (F3-10666CL9D-4GBBNQ) x2
OS: WINDOWS 7 Home Premium 64 bit
PSU: Vantec ION2 620W Ultra Quite

Here's the Pic first one is the Post on my brothers PC & the other's with the white lines are my PC: http://www.flickr.com/photos/48698505@N04/

For your brother's computer:
Unplug your brother's computer, touch an unpainted piece of metal in the computer to discharge static, remove the cmos battery (shinny round thing) for a minute or so, put it back in and trying booting the computer again.

Thanks for your reply, I did that and now it shows me the big GIGABYTE screen with:
TAB: POST SCREEN
DEL: BIOS SETUP\Q-FLASH
F9: XPRESS RECOVERY2
F12: BOOT MENU
END: Q-FLASH
and I pushed the TAB button but after that it stopped loading Post at 'Memory information: DDR3 1333 Unganged Mode' again.
If you would like I could take a photo and show you the GIGABYTE start up screen.

what revision is the motherboard?   Is it 1.0  or  1.1   ? ?

restart the computer and when you see that screen again, press F12 to select what drive to boot from.  Set the optical drive as first in the boot order, and the Hard drive as second, save the settings before exiting and restart the computer... see if it boots now

Unfortunately the F12 key doesn't seem to be working but the TAB is working. I tried to press F12 in the GIGABYTE start up screen as well as in Post but they are both not working.

well in the case of your board, f12 is just a short cut to set the boot order of the drives.  Use the DEL key instead to enter the bios.  Set the drive boot order there and try again

DEL key isn't working as well

Other CMOS setup keys are F1 and F2 try either of these. If you still can't get in try just holding keyboard keys down as the computer is booting so you'll get a stuck key error message and have the option to continue or enter setup.

I tried all those suggestions but they all seems to not be working. I simultaneously and singularly pressed random alphabets but it still didn't display the stuck key error as well.

I can't help wondering what would happen if you tried starting the computer with only one stick of ram, in the slot closest to the cpu.  Perhaps unganged mode is being forced because one of the ram modules have gone bad, which would also prevent booting.  Try one stick of ram in the slot closest to the cpu.. If no joy, try the other one.

edit: other one, meaning, the other ram stick in the slot closest to cpu

I tried booting the machine with one RAM closest to the CPU and one RAM second closest to CPU and pressed TAB. But the Post still shows the same message. And I also tried the blue slots as well.

Don't use both ram modules at the same time.. that defeats the purpose of my suggestion.  Power off the computer, remove both sticks of ram, insert one stick into the slot closest to the cpu and try booting the computer. If that doesn't work, remove the ram module and put the other one in the slot closest to the cpu, then try booting the computer...

That was what I did, I apologize for my bad grammar. My brother also told me that he frequently got that message 'Memory information: DDR3 1333 Unganged Mode' except that it didn't get stuck there. So I think that message is supposed to show up but isn't supposed to get stuck there,

hmmmm..  I can tell this is going to be fun..  maybe even a rant  ;)

Ok put the ram modules back the way they were..

Is your keyboard USB or the older PS2 type?

Title: Re: Post won't finish loading?
Post by: Heinstar on March 28, 2010, 02:46:35 AM
it's a USB and I know it's working because I tried 3 different keyboards. Besides I don't think my brother's mob supports PS/2 anyway :P
If this forum can't help me with this problem I'm going to take My PC and my brother's PC to the local PC store for a fix. But I still can't believe my GPU stuffed both my PC and my bro's PC...and all I did was switch the GPU.

I was going to suggest inserting the keyboard into a different usb port, I wasn't suspecting that your keyboard has a problem.  Try that if you haven't already.

The psu in your own computer might have enough power to run your bro's computer, try switching your psu over to his and try booting...

If this doesn't work, I'm afraid I'm going to have to gracefully bow out... best of luck

After reading your description of your problem plus the things you've tried. At this point I'd actually assume that you've got a hardware issue with the computer. Especially when your computer is getting video distortions in the BIOS / boot screen. My guess would be you've got a bad video card, motherboard, and/or Power Supply.

Nathan, heinster pretty much isolated the problem with HIS computer to his video card, by installing it into his brothers computer and getting the same problem, although the psu in his bro's computer may not be sufficient in power.

The problem were dealing with at this point (i think) is with his BROTHER'S computer.  It just doesn't want to boot now (stuck at the "unganged mode" message) since he removed his vid. card from the computer.

1.  Here's a similar "post".  I don't understand much about it, other than this guy "Henry" suggesting the original poster got "Intel spec RAM for an AMD system".  Perhaps you would understand whether this applies to your brother's system.

     New Build 770-G45 won't post (http://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=134917.0;prev_next=next)

Your brother's memory specs:
     F3-10666CL9D-4GBNQ  (http://www.gskill.com/products.php?index=89&c1=&c2=&search=RjMtMTA2NjZDTDlE)

2.  Any other compatible memory you could test your brother's machine with?

Unfortunately the only RAM I have is mine which is Transcend 1GB, DDR2-800 and I don't know if that is compatible with my bro's mobo. And also to the preview post, I'm sure my bro's PSU was sufficient in power because his is higher (550w) and mine is (500w). And keep in mind my bro's PC worked fine before I did this.

pardon me on this, your bro's psu clearly has more wattage. I must of had a brain fart

Does your Brothers machine support DDR3 @ 1333 ? ?
This should be the 1st thing he checks...

Does your Brothers machine support DDR3 @ 1333 ? ?

yes

From board manual:

"Support for DDR3 1666(O.C.)/1333/1066 MHz memory modules"

Even if the board didn't support 1333 MHz speeds, the ram would simply throttle back to the highest speed supported by the board.

This is somewhat of a mystery, although things do not break for no reason.  His brother's computer was fine, until he temporarily inserted the video card from his own computer to troubleshoot the card.  When his task of troubleshooting his video card was done, and the card was removed, his brother's computer fails to boot.  Hence, stuck at the "unganged mode" messege.

In a nut shell, his brother's computer was fine until he inserted the video card from his own computer.

I want to make sure that it is my GPU that is the problem. So I want to use my brother's GPU on my PC to see if it works;

Here's my spec:
CPU: Intel E6600
GPU: NVIDIA 8800GTS(faulty the one that screwed up my brother's PC)
Mobo: GIGABYTE 965P-DS3P(rev. 3.3)
RAM: Transcend 1GB, DDR2-800 x2
PSU:500w Antec Earth Watts Power Supply

Here's my bro's PC spec:
CPU: AMD phenom II 720 TripleCore
GPU: Zotac GTX260*2(216SP) 896M DDR3(Requires 2 PCI-E_)
Mobo: GIGABYTE GA-MA770T-UD3P AMD770/SB700 chipset/DDR3 1600(rev. 1.0)
RAM: G.Skill 2GB DDR3 1333 PC106666 (F3-10666CL9D-4GBBNQ) x2
PSU: Vantec ION2 620W Ultra Quite

Is it possible to just use my brother's GPU on my current spec? If I need to switch parts, from my brother's PC to mine which one do you suggest?

Although I don't feel like checking, your bro's graphics card may require a larger wattage PSU, but you may be able to get by using his card just to see if the problem with lines on the screen, is corrected.  I wouldn't count on running the card up to max settings, though.

I can't be bothered to switch his PSU onto my PC, if I use my PSU and doesn't have enough power, would it break his GPU?
EDIT: nm I changed the PSU just in case, I can't risk breaking another PC parts
EDIT: *censored* it didn't work, It just went to BSOD and restarted. I hope I didn't screw up the GPU.

No

Unless by some chance your own psu is faulty, outputting incorrect voltages or ripples

Don't worry about it now, I took my PC to the repair place and the problem was actually IDE and other cables not plugged in the motherboard properly. Thanks for all the help guys. I appreciate it.
