When using WE, each page has default (1) column headings showing the information to be displayed (e.g., Name, Type, Size, etc.) and (2) the view in which the information will be displayed, e.g., List, Details, Tiles, etc.)
How can the defaults for a given page be changed such that whenever I return to that page (be it 5 minutes or 5 months later), the column headings and view will be the ones I selected?

Are you saying you want different folders to have different columns?

Explorer should remember per-folder changes that you make. Please describe what problem(s) you are experiencing.

"VIEW: Detail" and "COLUMNS: Name, Date Modified, Size."
When I come back to the file later, especially after a reboot, the file will have gone back to perhaps
"VIEW: List" and "COLUMNS: Name, Date Acquired, Rating" and then I will have to reset the view and columns to what I have an interest in.
For many given files that I frequent, I would like to be able to set each to the different views and headings that are useful to me and not have to reset over and over and over when they've gone back to their default settings.

um... that doesn't make sense... I've always use details view- and those folders that I use thumbnails for remember that, as well.
The "list" view doesn't have column headers, either...
If you have something like deepfreeze installed that would of course cause this.

My LIST view has columns--I just selected a file at random, changed it to LIST view and the column headers were Name, Album artist, Date modified, and Size.
I don't have "deep freeze" installed (I don't even know what that is.)

Okay, well let's try this:
Start/Run/Regedit and Delete these two keys:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags
Then go to the following two dword keys and change the values of both to 000003e8:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell]
BagMRU Size
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam]
BagMRU Size

Now, if I understand your original post correctly- Windows Explorer <is> saving the view setting (details, with columns) but it isn't saving the columns you have selected.
If you want to have a number of folders with customized columns, you're probably out of luck-the storage mechanism only stores 128 folder views (sounds like more then it is) and if you revisit a folder whose settings have been purged it will appear using the defaults. (these settings are stored in the keys Allan just posted, I believe, as well as in hidden desktop.ini files in each folder)
Personally, I set all my defaults to the Details view (folder options, View tab, "Apply to all folders" When in details View). The columns save position and size, and have not changed as far as I've noticed, and I use explorer heavily for managing folders and files.
I'd give the bagMRUsize entry a change, as Allan suggested. You'll have to reset your options yet again, but with any luck they will be persistent.
Another possibility is some sort of conflict between different explorer instances if you have "use a separate process for each folder window" option.

that appears details view. And if it is in in List view then it is probably related to the fact that you aren't actually looking at files but rather at a "searches" namespace. my "searches" namespace only looks as you portray when I place it in "Details" mode. "List" Shows it as I portrayed earlier (the items are listed top to bottom, then left to right).
That being said, if your issue is with saving the view state of your "searches" area I don't believe that you can (it might only save for file system folders, I don't know)

Please note that this time my screen shot is of the file named "Documents" rather than the file named "Searches"...and that I've included the window that shows I am in the LIST view...and that there are four columns showing.

I think I should back up my registry before I start changing it, don't you? ...but I don't know how to back it up. What do you anticipate the changes will do?

They will do two things:
1) Clear the cache memory for WE customizations (deleting all current Windows Explorer customizations and reset the views to default) and
2) Increase the view memory of WE to 1,000
By all means, if you aren't used to making registry changes you should back it up:
Here are three options:
1) Click on START - RUN and type: Regedit (press ENTER). On the menu bar click on file, then export, choose where you want to save it, then enter a name for it in the box titled: File Name. At bottom put a tick in "All", then click on save. If you ever want to restore the saved version, just IMPORT it.
2) System Restore (it should save a copy daily, but you can always create a restore point manually.
3) The best method, in my opinion, is to download and run ERUNT. It's the best registry backup utility available - and it's free!!!
Of course the REAL best method is to use disc imaging software
